How many of you are hog hunting in the summer heat? How do you care for the meat or do you not meat hunt during the heat?

We only hunt on days that end in "y". The good thing about hog hunting in the summer heat is that the hogs are a little easier to pattern....they're typically not going to be out in the heat of the day (unless mbennet's dogs are on their tail!) Like 1911cowboy said....keep the cooler and ice handy. Get 'em skinned, gutted and on ice...then you won't have a problem.

In the summer they are lazy because of the heat. Keep your eyes peeled for a water hole. That's where I would hang around or come back to

looking at my cameras this wknd i was suprised how many were hitting feeders mid day.. 10am to 3pm.. showed 100 degrees on camera on some of the pics.. i was hoping for a morning kill but my sons hog came in the afternoon. i didnt waste any time gutting, skinning and quartering and getting on ice.. it was so hot when that hog came in we were sitting behind blind in shade and breeze and still sweating..

I will not eat them this time of year. If I am going to keep them I wait for a cold day. I will shoot them anytime I see them.

just wondering wazzup with the idea of "I am not eating summer pork" ?
If piggy got worms and survives summer (most likely they will survive much longer) Then in the fall or winter they still have those worms.
What is the difference then? Winter worms taste better?
And what kind are those worms? Intestinal or muscle tissue worms?

good question Red D.
i was going to go on a hog hunt for free and then i was told to wait till september. they said the hogs are covered in ticks n fleas. everything is florishing.

i killed one last year and didnt notice.

an as far as worms im intrested in knowing too. i never seen worms in the meat. iv gutted and quarterd out plenty hogs on the field in winter season and didnt see anything.

I shot one a few weeks ago. Grabbed it by the ear for about 30 seconds to snap a couple pictures and then left it there for the buzzards. About 15 minutes later I noticed I had a tick attached to my forearm. For that reason I will not be cleaning any hogs until it cools down and I can hang them up over night.

Spray em with paint thinner and light em up smile
You gonna fry all fleas and ticks, And do a complete "hair removal" !

As a side note: it is actially funny, when upnorth hunting squirrels in winter,
When you shoot one, leave it on the snow.
20-30 minutes later there will be a black halo around dead squirrel - all fleas are jumping the boat.

They have fleas and tics all year. Just get em on ice as soon as you can and they are fine. Any excuse not to clean one in the summer is just that an excuse cause people can. It's legal to leave em and since they are taking over the world and gonna run us of our planet and eat what's left then anybody that kills one is a hero and prolly just saved a dozen baby humans from being eatin. So shoot away and don't worry about the meat there's plenty more.

Exactly. I shoot them all year long and if I keep one or how ever many I just clean them right away and get them on ice.

If some animals are good at hunting and others are suitable for hunting, then the Gods must clearly smile on hunting.
