I have noticed that all the chocolate labs that I know are not as active as yellows and blacks. My female will hunt for a long time but will not fetch toys for a long time.I also notice that alot of field trial dogs on tv are black or yellow. Is this just me or is it true

I have heard it but I don't beloieve most of what I hear. I believe it could be something in the genes but I haven't researched it enough. Never needed to because I won't have a choc lab. That is my preference only so you choc lab owners there is no need to fire the kiln with my butt in it.

Here is the issue with chocolates: They were bred more back in the early 90's for no other reason than they were chocolate> They were not as widely available so alot of city folk bred and bought them based solely on their color. This resulted in a big line of chocolate dogs out there that no longer had the desire or the ability to do field work.
That said, a chocolate dog bought from working parents and a proven line is just as good a dog as a black or yellow dog. It all comes down to researching what you are buying and being informed. There is a big difference between the $50 newspaper dog and the well bred dog from a responsible breeder.

Thats exactly it, took the words right out of my mouth Zack!! Black has just been bred more for FT's and HT's so thats why the availability of quality dogs is higher, yellow has been moving up the ladder as well, chocolates will catch up eventually.

Spent a few days with a guy Named Frank Price who owns a Choco named Roux and there is ABSOLUTELY nothing lazy about this dog.I think if you are looking for a performance chocolate you need to do some research on particular lines.

just remember that you can have choc., black, and yellow out of the same litter. then they should all be on a level playing field.

All I know is that I have a black, a yellow and a chocolate lab. The black is the sire of the chocolate. The yellow came from a different kennel.
The chocolate is by far the better hunter of the three. By far.

I have a yellow and chocolate and the chocolate has a better nose and takes it time to find a bird but the yellow is more hyper and hunts more with his sight i think. The yellow will hunt longer than my chocolate and will fetch bumpers longer too.

Originally in the ealier days of the lab breed in england, blacks were bred for field use. Then along came the yellow which were preferred in the show ring. The chocolates were a reccessive trait brought out by breeding the two together. However, they were looked down upon as being inferior and destoyed. At any rate, originally, what was really one breed of dog actually became three. These days though the lines are a lot less defined, however certain characteristics do pop up from time to time. A chocolate may take on characteristics of either black of yellow or be a cross of both. I have seen some really outstanding chocolates in the field as well as yellows but overall I think the black still dominates there.
