At our place in Lavaca County we are not allowed to shoot does during rifle season unless we have obtained MLD permits. I am trying to wrap my head around this because any given night at our feeder we have at least 15 does and 1 if not zero bucks! The only bucks we ever see out there are mickey mouse 4 pointers or the occasional 6 pointer with about a 10" spread.

I understand the antler restrictions and trying to let the bucks grow to maturity, but not being able to shoot does, especially when they are in abundance has never made any sense to me.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

how many acres do you have?

i would enroll in a wildlife co-op and get some doe tags.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

If unsucessful at Txtrophy85's suggestion, it might be time for a crossbow. Not ideal but they are accurate and easy to shoot, plus legal in bow season, to remove a few does.

We also hunt in lavaca county. We like the A.R. program, but needless to say I will not open up that can of worms on here, things get CRAZY!! We usually kill one decent size/aged buck a year for the area. We see a decent amount of bucks, but many were too small or we wanted to let them grow. Our place is only 100 acres, and we wanted to kill a few doe also. I don't bowhunt there, so we talked with the game bio, and he set us up in the MLD program, and it is super easy, and gave us TWO doe tags. This biologist has been promoted, so not sure who is handling it now, but get in contact with the game warden and I am sure he can point you in the right direction!

tpwd knows your deer better than you but if you want to shoot the deer population that you know well then you need to bring in tpwd to learn about your deer. isnt that comforting?

We have a little under 300 acres. We have done the LAMPS permits for the last few years, but it just seems unnecessary. We have to take a survey of the deer for thirty days, even though we are only there on the weekends, if that much, so the numbers end up getting fudged. After filling out the paperwork, mailing it in with the money, we end up getting 2 doe permits. That might be enough for just me, but I end up having to share them with my two brothers. So two of us get one doe, and one of us is S.O.L. It just doesn't make any sense especially when there are literally 15 does under the feeder at once.

You got into the MLD program with 100 acres? Or are you talking about LAMPS permits for does?

We got two doe tags. I am really not sure, thought it was mld tags? Have to look. We have to do counts throughout the year and submit it and also report our harvest data, e..g. :weights, ages, scores. I could be wrong, thought it was MLD tags and program.
