Seen this guy moving across an open field about 30 yards from where my kids were practicing soccer in Keller last night. I am no expert on snakes. He wasn't aggressive. He doesn't appear to be venomous. I chased him into a pasture with some knee high grass.

I have never seen a "short" bull snake.I think that one is either a rat snake or a bull.

Looks like a Prairie Kingsnake. Head is to small and wrong shape for a Bullsnake.

Thats what Im thinking. The patern is wrong for a bull snake and the small head.

Bull snakes are neither short nor fat....I'm not sure what you're thinking of.

I've seen two bull snakes in the Hill Country that were 7-8 ft.

Prairie king snake. They usually are very docile creatures and very beautiful.

It is a bull snake, hands down. Looks a lot like a gopher snake but the only gopher i'd expect you to see would be well west of Ft. Worth area. Glad you chased it off instead of killing it. They are rodent eates and capable of consuming a large quantity of them. Will only try and bite if cornered and even then, it prefers to hiss and just rattle it's tail (imitating a rattler). Completely non-venomous and very beneficial.

Like I said, I didn't think it was venomous. It was at a soccer complex where about 50 10-12 yr old kids were practicing. If one of the kids had seen it, it could've turned into a bad situation. It was a beautiful creature though. I think it was a rat snake now after reading everything here. The pattern and colors do not match the bull snake.

Short and fat confused2 Nearly all bull snakes I have seen with any age on them are long and skinny. I call Bull snake on this one for sure.

It's one of these. 100% Bull Snake (Pituophis catenifer sayi). It's a sub-species of the Golpher Snake (Pituophis catenifer). No question.

X1,000,000

And keep in mind that pattern and color can vary from animal to animal but that is a Bull snake for certain.
