Just picked Springfield up yesterday.. Born on April 1941 with a serial number of 2xxxxx. If they made 6.1 million before the war ended that would be pretty good right? Everything looks and reads genuine, the only thing I see is the barrel is stamped 1950.
I know not to use factory 30.06 but does anyone here have a good recipe that I can start with? Any help would be appreciated.

There have been a few discussions on the Garand over the last couple years http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u...and#Post2749904I do not have or reload for the Garand but several on here do. The newer Hornady manual has data for the Garand, also Accutate Powder does. Someone sais the latest Sierra manual also has data for the Garand.

4895 is a good powder for the Garand. As usual, start low and work your way up looking for signs of pressure.

I haven't loaded for the Garand, but I understand it and the M 14 can have some issues w/pressure on the bars ect..I don't know how to reach him, but their is an old Marine Corp. armorer that shoots at Bandera Gun Club wkly and lives in Boerne that would be able to help you..They were and are an awsome rifle..Don

Buy the newest Hornady loading manual it has a specific section for the Garand.
Varget also works well in the Garand the powder needs to be of the faster variety to safely operate in the Garand, if too slow of a powder is used gas port pressure will be too high and cause operating rod damage.

Most Garands available today were rebarreled at some point after WWII. That rifle might have sat in storage ever since the rebuild, or it might have seen extensive use. Be sure and check your headspacing and throat erosion--gauges for both are readily available through Brownell's, or a similar vendor. As for ammo, unless you have your heart set on reloading, check with the Civilian Marksmanship Program . They are still selling .30-'06 ammo.

I second the CMP recommendation above. You can also pick up Greek ammo for the Garand on Texas gun trader every now and then.
