I am in the process of securing a lease spot with a group on the "La Escalera Ranch". There are several groups hunting the 34,000 acre ranch. I understand it shares a good sized fence line with the GIANT Waggoner ranch. Supposed to have big buck potential, and also sounds like a good group of serious like minded hunters that are hunting close to 500 acres each. Any one familiar with the area, or ranch, or know of the potential? Thanks

Man if you get it you will have a helluva chance to get a huge deer. Ive seen some monsters walking on the side of the road up there. Theres a few mule deer up there too. Might be kind of scarce but they are there. Theres a huge canyon between benjamin and seymour that ive always wanted to hunt. Watch out for the red clay when it rains that crap is slick. The cedars make for some good cover for the animals. ALL kinds of them. Dont be surprised if you see an animal that youve never seen before. And your right about the waggoner ranch, that place is massive. I hunt just south of where youll be.

I have a 3,800 acre lease there about 10 miles East of Seymour. There are alot of deer in that area, and some big ones. Still, you have to be selective, which most in the area are not. I have a group that lease the ranch just south of me and they put heavy pressure on the deer in our part of the county. If you go to the local processor in downtown Seymour and look at what is brought in you will see a alot of immature bucks. I believe that the hunters in this area pretty much shoot whatever has horns on it. Still, if you are patient, and hunt often enough, you will see some nice deer.

there are also alot of hogs, turkey, and predators to hunt. It is a pretty much year round area as far as hunting goes.

I also hunt Sterling County and several East Texas counties. The size of bucks in Baylor County does not rival what I see out in Sterling, but there are some nice ones for sure. I would put the size more in line with what I see in East Texas, but they are easier to hunt since they will come to bait much more readily than the deer do in the woods of East Texas.

Do make sure you have water. This year the tanks are not getting full despite the rains they have had out there. I think the water situation is going to be not good by late in the summer. I am not happy with the water level in our tanks out there. This is going to be a critical situation out there once again this upcoming season.

I have a feeling bag limits will be reduced this year. Deer numbes were down last season and a whole year of fawns was wiped out. That, coupled with a coninuing drought and shortage of water is going to put alot of pressure on deer in this part of the state.

Thanks for the input. I am hoping this is a much better situation than what y'all are describing. This ranch (the whole 34,000 acres) has fairly rigid harvest guidlines and trophy managemnt practices in place. I am optimistic that those factors combined with a beyond large non hunted neighbor will produce better than average results. But i am not trying to get ahead of myself.
Keep the input coming, and thanks.

I hope you are right about the bag limits.

I drive through there fairly often and I have seen some really nice bucks when driving through the area.
