Texas Parks and Wildlife Department sent this bulletin at 05/10/2012 07:00 AM CDT

Texas Parks and Wildlife Department is interested in leasing land for hunting dove, waterfowl, pheasant, quail, feral hog, squirrel and rabbits. The length of the lease and price per acre are negotiable. We are most interested in areas of 100 acres or more located within a 2 hour drive of population centers.

Support the hunting heritage of Texas and help us offer affordable hunting opportunities for families while earning supplemental income.

For more information:

Email us at hunt@tpwd.state.tx.us, contact your local county biologist or call the Public Hunting Program at (800) 792-1112, menu 5, selection 1 or (512) 389-4505.

And I had forgotten, the 3Ks ranch 3700 acres between Boerne and Bandera was given to them recently and TPWS is going to do nothing with it because of lack of money. You can't have it both ways.

They have 360 acres that they lease from a guy south of Loraine, Tx for dove hunting. Unfortunately it is only one of a couple of areas we have here in West Texas.

Interesting...I hope hunters are good land stewards and don't ruin it for others.

I would have a hard time giving up that much control for such in an increase in liability

Donate to TX Youth hunting program.... better to donate then to waste it in taxes

TPWD has canceled several land agreements they had over the last two years! I had hunted fields all around Krum Texas for 15 years, then all of a sudden all of them were OFF LIMITS! The reasons given to me by TPWD & Game Warden was the state was tired of paying the land owner 10's of thousands of dollars only to have the land owner do NOTHING with the fields! NO crops, no turning of the soil, NOTHING! then 2 years ago they threatened to pull the funds and the guy planted every single acre in milo and cut it 5 days before opening day! it was awesome! But the State decided to look elsewhere for this season.....

And it's great that people are willing/giving land to the state. I wouldn't expect the land that was given to the state open for public use for 4-5 years- I would think they would do surveys and find out what they have, then get the money to build infrastructure... 5-7 years at the earliest. I would love for around here to give some land to them. I think there was only 3-4 spots for dove around last year and one for waterfowl... but it was atleast an hour away.

I'm sure there is land out there that was given to the state that nothing will be done with it for a few years down the road.

I have no idea BUT I do know that they are enforcing their rules in relation to the land the state leases! IE; the land MUST be cultivated and planted with crops unless it was pasture land to begin with! They will no longer tolerate land owners who make their land available for public hunting, take the money and then do NOTHING with the fields! If the land owners do NOT abide by the lease agreements then the state will take them to court and ask for them to return the funds!

Where are you getting your information on this? Please show it in print from TPWD on their agreements with the landowners.

Texas Park and Wildlife is not"broke".
Our money was diverted to the Black Hole by Texas Legislature. hammer

The sporting goods sales tax, on the other hand, is indisputably a tax. A portion of the sales tax paid on items such as hunting and fishing gear, camping equipment and bicycles is supposed to go to the perennially underfunded state parks system. But ever since it was set up in 1993, the sporting goods sales tax has been under assault from lawmakers.

This session is no exception. Every year, the tax generates well over $100 million, money that theoretically should go to purchasing new parkland, improving existing parks and funding conservation efforts. This session, the House is directing just one-quarter of the sporting goods tax to parks. That’s less money than parks were getting in the 1990s. The rest is being diverted into general revenue to pay for schools, prisons and roads. [Emphasis added]

[...]

“The truth is that legislators are using most of the license plate money and the majority of the sporting goods tax revenue to try to balance the budget,” says Ken Kramer, executive director of the Lone Star chapter of the Sierra Club. “The Legislature needs to keep the faith with the public and use the money raised for parks and wildlife to maintain our parks and protect our wildlife.”

For years 2009 and 2010:
236 Million dollar revenue from:
Pittman-Robertson Act: Friend Of The Hunter & Hunted
http://www.nraila.org/Issues/FactSheets/Read.aspx?id=103

82 Million went to TPWD

154 Million was diverted to GAO BH

That does not include License, Gate fee, Permits, stamp, etec sales revenue.

about 75% of our money is being diverted into the GAO BH.

X2

Unless things change this will ruin hunting, outdoors, fishing, tradition, and TPWD as we know it. Be like UK where only the royalty hunt.

Due to diversion of funding from TPWD by Texas Legis. there are now at least 5 new accquired WLMA, lands, and ranchs that TPWD can't even open because of loss and diversion of Sportsman, hunting, fishing, etc, funding to help cover the state defecit. hammer

The easy fix is to tell them to shove it and lease it to the private sector; especially if it falls within a cpl hours of heavily populated areas. Same/more $, less people.
