Hey Guys

I am about an hour and a half away from any veternarian and have been seeing a bunch of rattlesnakes lately. Any home remedies for a snake bite for my dog if she gets bit? She is a half pit and half boxer, weighs about a 100 lbs. and loves to varmint hunt. She has killed lots of coons, a bobcat that I shot and just clipped it. She caught it before it could take off and man what a fight! Impossible to keep her out of the brush so I am worried about a snake bite. Any ideas?

Snakebite shot. First year they get two shots four weeks apart and cost about 40 bucks. Thereafter one booster a year.

we've had several dogs bit over the years always in head or legs, I just take a syringe needle and drain the pus out good and give a couple rds of penicilin and they're back to normal within 24 hrs, Has worked on weenie dogs, labs and bull mastiffs.

I'm with outnumbered, had several dogs bit over the years, they swell up and stink and lay around for several days. Only had one to die, she was a pit catchdog, she killed and ate said rattlesnake but in the process was bitten many times and it did her in. For a single bite we keep an eye on them keep them cool with plenty of freshwater and they normally pull through on their own.

I'm always amazed at how well dogs seem to tolerate a bite, specially a bite to the head, seem to be better for em to take one in the face than the leg.

I've read that you should carry a vile of BENADRYLL with you, and treat the dog immediately. It's a anti poison/swelling treatment drug.

We killed a baby rattler in camp saturday night. Windy, warm and humid brings 'em out...Watch your step. The small ones scare me more than the big ones, they're too low profile and harder to see, especially at night.

GET THE RATTLESNAKE VACCINE, like mentioned above. Had a lab bit after having the vaccine. She swelled up a bit but by the next daying you couldn't even tell she had been bit. Still took her to a vet, who gave her some BENADRYLL and some fluids.

Thanks for the info guys. I had heard of the vaccine but never talked to anyone that had used it and had a dog bit. Gonna get it tomorrow. Our place is around Rocksprings and we have been seeing a bunch of snakes this year. Had the place since 06 and killed 3 rattlesnakes total. I have killed 5 in the last 10 days. Dont know why they are so bad this year but anyone that is in that area, BE CAREFUL!

The snakebite shot is not the cure all fix accordinng to people in the know but it will give you more time according to some if they have a severe bite it might even save their life. When we are talking about our best friend next to family that doesn't seem like too much to invest do you think? grin

I think the key thing here is they do not have a lot of meat in those areas. Their lower legs are mostly bone and they probably do not get a big dose of venom. A person has a lot more meat for the snake to really sink its fangs in and pump venom.

Yup that and veins...ever wondered why a hawk or egale can grab a snake and not have to worry about a bite.

Not a good place. Lots of muscle there. The worst bites of course are when they connect with a blood vessel but after that it is in the meaty areas. I knew a guy that got hit by a cottonmouth in the calf. 25 years later he still has a very deep and ugly scar. A forest service dude got hit by a monster Eastern Diamondback in the back of the the thigh in NC. His buddy left him for 10 minutes to get help. Got back and he was dead. Fangs were so big they penetrated the femoral artery.

My Dad's lab got bite a few years ago. She had gotten the rattlesnake shot before hand and it saved her life.

Ok guys, I'm gonna chime in but not sure if it's a "worthy" anecdote. Growing up in East Texas you hear things of old "tried and true cure alls". Anyway, I used to hunt with a buddy of mine whose place backed up to an old man's house called "Rambo". He lived in an old run down house and had numerous dogs. He told us for snake bites on a pooch he would keep a mason jar filled with turpentine and coal oil and an old "mechanics" rag (one of those thin red ones). If the dog got bit on the leg he would tie the rag on the leg above the bite. Not sure if it works or not but....Do yall think this would work? Thoughts?
