Carol tried to sneak up close to the pair of Mandarins that are nesting here this year. The hen is spookier than the drake. Carol caught them just as she was taking off.

Those are beautiful. Never seen those anywhere here up north.

Not many people pet pics of wild ones here in the south or even the US.

Kind of like winning the lottery and shooting an Albino Pintail with a band and a Antenna in the same day.

Congrats

Guess I'm not too sure of what some of the recent posts were supposed to mean. If you were suggesting that the Mandarins aren't real or don't stay here on our property ...

I can see that they are real, what I mean is I have never seen a wild mandarin in my life.

My question is where did they come from, Bonham City park?

Yeah that's what I meant as well. They are more likely from a zoo that to have migrated here.

Oh and by the way that takes nothing away from how cool they are.

They are incredible looking ducks, it would be interesting to find out how they ended up here in TX. I wonder if they are the beginning of an invasive species...

I was told that someone in the Bonham area used to raise decorative birds, including Mandarins, and that part of their enclosure was knocked down in a storm a few years back. We've had as many as seven here at one time and they almost always fly in with regular Wood Ducks.

Norman Monk, the owner of Fowl Play Game Birds, lives about 3 miles from us and he had never heard the story about the Mandarins escaping from a local raiser. He had heard reports of some being sighted in the area but hadn't seen any himself.

BTW ... when we have Mallards, Whistlers, Woodies, Honkers and Mandarins together at the feeder, guess who's the "boss bird"? The drake Mandarin is more than feisty. He chases all the other ducks away and will stand up to Honker threats as well.

Cappy, Please dont take my Post that way.

I sincerly mean you are very fortunate. Just like Exotics get loose in Texas and begin to populate like the axis herds.

Around White Rock Lake in the Summer we get Egyptian Geese.

I am not sure where they came from, but they show up every year.

And what about the Eurasin Doves, we didnt see them 10 yrs ago. Now they are everywhere.

If these birds are making nest on your land that is wonderful and a great sign.

As long as they don't push out native birds like Mallards, woodie, gadwalls, pintails, ect... you might want to ask the DFW about them...
