Anyone have any experience with these? Thinking of doing away with the idea of a scope on a 1895 Marlin Guide gun I picked up this weekend. It's main use will be hunting hogs in thick mesquite and plumb thickets so shots will be under 100. Thinking the brass sight would look great as well as functional for a brush gun.

Thoughts?

I am not familiar with the Skinner Peep Sights but I put the Lyman Peeps on every Marlin lever action I buy. They come with a target insert and one for hunting. They are 1/4 MOA adjustable with audible clicks. and are very durable. Maybe not a pretty as the brass but the best I have used.

Hey, just looked at the skinner sights. They pretty nice looking and appear to be very durable. I would say far more so than the Lyman I use.

I was thinking about the brass skinner express sights, or they also got some "tactical" peep sights for the 1895 that might work better for a hunting rifle.

Yeah, I have one on my Marlin 1984 in 357. I like the site alot and it makes the gun look cool. They are extremely easy to install, the only issue that I ran into was the front sight was way to high and I had to file on it quite a bit. Pics to follow...

Nathan, you had to modify the front sight post?

@ chootum, yes sir it was shooting about 8 inches high and I had to file it down...

It was very easy to do, just required a little filing, then a little shooting, to get it to hit the mark...

Nathan not being smart here but don't you mean that it was shooting low? filing the front sight would bring the point of impact up I am pretty sure.
But regardless it is a real cool looking setup.

America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

You are right I ment to say I had to file it down to bring it up 8 inches, you only have about 2 inches of adjustment in the rear sight up or down.

You can also order different height front sights to taylor it to your rear sight height.

For the money it's hard to beat the XS system. You can buy a threaded peep that will allow you to use different size apertures, and the white stripe front sight is very easy to acquire in the field.

They're marketed as "ghost ring", but you can buy a threaded peep and put any size aperture in there that you want. Adjustments are easy and it locks down tight. Very small and unobtrusive.
