Thinking about coming over this weekend to hunt. I have one more Texas tag to fill. Has anyone heard or seen any this season?

Must be some turkeys there this year since nobody is responding. I know there were lots of jakes last year there, so there should be a few 2 yr. olds left to hunt. I'm going anyway. I've limited out in LA. and haven't hunted in over two weeks, so I'm going crazy. I need to turkey hunt somewhere.

We have been out a couple of times. Had a couple gobbling the first time out (opening day) but second time not a sound. Probably head out again tomorrow. I know you know LBJ it is always challenging but that is why they call it hunting not just killing.

Yeah, it is challenging. I may try a few new areas this go around. I'll probably go by a couple spots where I have been successful also. Looks like the weather is going to be perfect.

Went up there and hunted Saturday evening and Yesterday after a hunt in Pottsboro and didn't hear any gobbling. Saw plenty of gobbler tracks and got startled by a hen who took off out of the grass right in front of me and my gf on the way back to the truck. Was a last ditch effort to try and get her her first bird but it looks like we'll have to wait until next year.

I hunted Sat. afternoon and all day Sunday and didn't hear or see a thing. No tracks, except for human and cattle. Talked to a couple other hunters and they hadn't seen or heard anything all weekend. I did tag out Monday morning on a nice longbeard, but not at LBJ. I was hoping to fill my last Texas tag at LBJ, but it just didn't happen. Been a great year anyway.

First post here. Have been up a handful of times and haven't heard or seen anything. Beautiful land but just doesn't seem to have birds on it. What gives?

What unit did you hunt? I'm going to make a trip up there before the season ends. From what I've read LBJ has birds, but it's hit or miss.

I was out there all weekend. Birds are shut down due to pressure. There are a ton of birds they are just lying low right now.

Not exactly sure of the unit number but it was right around and just north of Black Creek Reservoir. I've only seen a couple of other guys hunting out there. I hope i'm in the right place!

That makes feel a little better. Next time I go (tomorrow) I'll put my walking shoes on, find a spot off the beaten path and just sit down and do some clucking and purring. That's what worked in New Mexico last week as those birds weren't quite ready.

Let us know how you did. I just want to hear someone say they heard a turkey gobble at LBJ. I don't think there are near as many turkeys there as some people think. There is just too much private land they can stay on and be safe.

There are a lot of birds there but as you say there is quite a bit of private land scattered in between where they seem to retreat to after being pressured a bit. I also think the birds started early this year and gobbling/breeding has slowed down. I think nimber have declined over the years as when I first started hunting the grasslands some years back I can remember working up to 8 gobblers at once in a single morning. One of the units I hunted this past weekend had evidence that a couple of birds had been harvested. I saw nitro turkey shot shells and feathers near a huge mequite tree that I usually set under while hunting on a particular unit. Also have a couple of friends who harvested a couple of birds on 2 different units this spring. They are there but it will be hard to close the deal this year because of the pressure and the fact that they started early. The last bird I killed there was back on the last weekend of the season back in 08. Was the biggest bird with the longest spurs i've taken to date.

Does anyone have any advise on which unit/s I should consider hunting? I'm not asking anyone to give up their honey hole. I've never been to LBJ and have no idea where to start. Sounds like it's going to be a tough hunt regards.

I'd love to help you but of the half dozen times that i've scouted, listened and hunted the units surrounding Black Creek Lake i've only seen a couple of tracks in one small area. Good luck.

The birds will roost in the creek bottoms then come out into the fields to feed. They don't seem to be calling much so you are going to have to pick a field and hope for the best. If you can back up to private land, even better. You may be able to convince them to cross the fence line...

Thanks for the info. I have two friends with turnkeys on their land, but both of them went hunting on the 21st and that was the ONLY day I couldn't go. So if I want to turkey hunt it's public land for me. Maybe I'll just go up there pick a unit and hope I get lucky.

Went this morning and nothing, nada, zilch. No gobbles, no runs, drips or errors. I did some walking and found a place for tomorrow morning. Nothing promising, just looks like there could be a turkey around there. We'll see. I think if I hear one gobble or see one tomorrow I might just $h!t my pants in excitement!

Haha, I'll be interested to hear your report. I'm trying to decide whether I should make the 4 hour drive or not. Right now I'm leaning towards NOT.

You are probably better off going east and hunting the pine woods for easterns.

Were's a good place to hunt easterns? LBJ's not sounding too promising.

Hahaha no kidding. Its 45 min for me too and I dont usually give it much thought until near the last of the season to see if i can get a late spring tom wandering around looking for any un nested hens.
