I'm thinking about heading up to Granger one of these weekends to try to nab some rabbits for jambalaya. Any suggested areas? I'm not asking anyone to give away any secrets, but if you've been hog hunting in Pecan Grove or San Gabriel units, have you scared up any cottontails?

I hunted the San Gabriel unit about 2 months ago and didn't see a single one. I didn't have my dogs so that may have been the problem.

I have flushed them up frequently in the Pecan Grove unit on the South side of the river. Good luck.

Aren't rabbits a little wormy this time of year?

No worms in the rabbit I shot last month, and it was delicious. I think as long as you cook the meat well and discard anything that's obviously tainted, there's no more problem with eating a summer rabbit than there would be eating a summer hog. Waiting until after the first frost, as the old-timers tell you to do, won't get you much meat here in South Texas.
