For a while now, I've been wanting to get out and hunt some elk or mule deer out in Colorado or New Mexico, but really don't know what all is involved in setting up a hunt like that. Anyone been on a hunt like that before? Is it possible to do a hunt like that without an outfitter on public lands?

My friends use a do it yourself outfitter. They mule you up the mountain set up and take down haul your kill out. Its all about timing

jmac... I've made a number of trips to New Mexico, and it can be done very easy without a guide or outfitter. The downside to New Mexico, for elk, everything is a lottery draw. However, you can purchase LANDOWNER TAGS, that will get you on an elk hunt; but, they tend to be expensive.

Archery tags are somewhat easier to get rather than rifle, but still can be difficult. I usually put in for muzzleloader tags, and have been fairly successful.

I have been applying for elk tags in Arizona for 6 years now and still haven't been drawn. I have gone to the indian reservation and hunted up there on a guided hunt for a cow elk with a bow and had a blast. I would certainly do it again someday.
