Vmax will absolutely ruin a prairie dog's day!

Thanks for the comments. I'm having a problem with coyotes running off after the shot, very little on the blood trail, and not being recovered. I started loading this bullet because of the great feedback I've read.
Let's assume shot placement is correct. I think next I have to take a look at my load, maybe not getting proper expansion.
For the experts, I'm loading 18.0 gr of IMR 4198, running them out of a R700 SPS Tactical (20" bull barrel). Any thoughts?

Yup, they blow up on contact.

Coyotes are tough for there size, I've shot several with my .22-250 and v-maxes and they go down but still crawl off into the brush.
V-max is a great bullet though, very rapid expansion
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

if you are getting runners with a 55 v-max at 223 velocities which are about ideal for that bullet YOU are doing something wrong. stick it anywhere in the shoulder area and you will fold em like a cheap suit . through the lungs and they will run maybe 50 yards, a few inches further back than that and they will run 100 to 150 yards. and that experiace is not from just a few, but from a few hundred.

That is a pretty light load, you are giving up probally 300fps of velocity or a little more to a max load of IMR4198. With the slower velocity you are giving up some on expansion and energy. Think of it this way shooting a yote with your load at 100 yards is about the same as shooting one at 200 yards with a max load. Not an expert just my

I use the 50-grainers in .222, .223, and .220 Swift. They're very accurate bullets. I think Ballistic Tips might be a hair more accurate, but no by much. I'd recommend V-Max to anyone wanting to reload a .22 centerfire.

I shoot 55gr vmax in 223 with 23 grains of imr4198. It puts them down. I worked my way up to that load, wouldn't recommend starting there.

didn't realize that it was that light of a loading so please excuse my previous opinion. That is below the minimum load data in one book at least. I would bet that if you bring it up to somewhere between 20 to 21 grains your going to notice a huge difference in that bullets effectiveness. And you will still be below the max loading and somewhere around 3000 fps vs the approx 2500 your getting now.

SouthTexas36,
If you like the 55gr., try the 75gr. Devastating on coyotes and wind doesn't effect them nearly as much.

I know at least one manual suggests a little heavier charge than that as max, there may be others as well...but, have you considered moving on to a powder that would give you better velocity, and presumably better bullet performance? I'd suggest Benchmark (my choice powder for .223), H335, TAC, BL-C2, W748, H322, or something along those lines. You're probably getting around 2700 fps (but could be quite a bit less depending on your rifle) with your load, while passing up a potential of around 3250 fps, maybe more. I think that bullet ought to be dropping any well-hit coyote in his tracks if the range is short even at lower velocities, but if they're out there a ways them maybe not. I think more velocity would make a real difference...especially if it's on the order of 500 fps more.

I love the hornady line but my new favorite ammo is black hills blue box 223. The 75gr match Hollow points are great. I hit a yote far back in his hind quarters and he only ran about 75-100 yards.

I know we're discussing yotes but my brother in law dropped a100lbs pig at +-100yrds with 55gr moving about 3200fps. Needless to say he did scramble the pigs brains

Did some load development work yesterday with the Hornady 55 V-Max on top of Ramshot X-Terminator. Details are on the picture.
