Besides staking a chicken out of the coop down, what is the best wait to bait them? I know they go after the chickens like crazy but i would like to be able to draw them in and shoot them before they get to the coop. Any suggestions?

Do you have access to dead things? If you hunt hogs their carcass works well though it will be gone in no time. Perhaps a local rancher would have or know someone that has a dead cow (especially with cows dropping calves right now it is inevitable to lose a few in your area).

The issue with this approach however is it forces you to wait on the coyotes for when they want to feed. Therefor night and early the nextorning is your best bet to hunt a carcass. Also, it is inevitable a rotting carcass is going to stink and leave scattered bones on your property.

Live baiting is effective so as you ensure they can't get to your bait; however it puts you in a waiting game also and who is to say your bait creature will be noisy enough to grab a predators attention in a timely manner?

So this is why many of us call. You get the noise to bring them in timely and without the muss an fuss of an organic decoy be it alive or dead. You can use an artificial decoy or even live creature to enhance your calling, but this isn't completely necessary.

I went out and bought an electronic call and it just dosnt seem to be working. I can sit out and call them for hours, and I dont think im overcalling them, and they just don't seem to come. Driving in from work today I see three of them damn near on the doorstep. Its a good thing I pulled up when i did because my wifes favorite cat was about to get it. I saw some stuff for yotes at gander mountain. Does it work? I sure dont want to lose another one of my laying hens. I know I could put dead stuff out there but, like you say, who wants to live with the stench? I just want to weed out this pack that is brave enough to come to the lights on a timely effective manner. Im not new to shooting them, I just want to know if there is any means to persuede them to come on in on a timeline that works with my .223 being in my hands.

Coyotes come to something called "Gut Pile" i got some at academy and hung it on the fence. No call used just this bag of stink. I sat 75 yards upwind in some hay bales. Coyotes would run in catch my scent and look for me but never stopped coming to the bait.

try snares along the fence line and very large trebel hooks with a piece of meat hanging from a tree limb about 3 ft off the ground.

I saw the hooks snares before in Caldwell. You know when you got one thats for sure.

I've heard some people will get a deer carcass from the processors, and tie it to a tree for a day or so before a full moon. Sit out in an open field w/ bino's and a decent scope, and you can get quite a few. I have done 0 research to know if it's legal to use a processors carcass', but just throwin out ideas. Also, if you're hunting the same spot over and over, I would wait atleast a month before trying to call them again. They get smart, and you will likely waste your time. Snares work if you're very careful in scent control. However, even with perfect scent control, it can still take multiple days to grab one. Also, if you're on a small piece of property, you can try peeing on the holes they make under the fence.Works for a few days.

I might have to try this at my place. I usually use a deer carcass and tie a rope thru it to a t post in the ground. Once they get use to coming to a baited area i just keep adding scrap meet i get from buddies that don't cook everything in their frezer. I don't bait at the house, as i have a young dog and don't know what she will do when yotes come up to the house. My neighbor baits regularly and has yotes coming in every night. I gave him a light i had rigged up. It is connected to a motion sensor, just run power to it from your house, you will need an outlet on the motion sensor and run a line back to your house. When they trigger the sensor it will send power to whatever you have plugged into it (radio, alarm clock). He goes to his upstairs bathroom window and shoots them pretty regular. They come in almost every night. Below is a picture from where i was baiting hogs and yotes to the same spot. Just tossing scraps out near the hole i was baiting pigs.

Yea and the old neighbor lady's poodle too. Hooks with meat would not be a very good idea.

I just hung it on a fence. They never made it to the bag to steel it. When we were done we put it in 2 ziplocks and froze it. We you one bag about 3 times before we just poured it out making a trail to where we were fishing. Then we just tossed a line and waited.

Thanks for all the great advice I will post pictures on here whenever I figure out how. I just got off my night shift and don't have to be back till 315 monday. Should get a yote in there somewhere. I prefer not to snare them, although I have done it before and it works well. That is a "can't outsmart them to hunt them kind of move." I'm sure that my luck will improve and my chickens will remain safe. I hope so anyway seeing as how chicks don't lay eggs.
