24/7. Probably not a popular hypothesis, but tell me I am wrong.

This is what I think is the main cause for the demise. Run into lots more predators than I used to.

CSF you may be on to something; back in the 60's and 70's when fur prices were good; many people were trapping coons, ringtails, foxes, feral cats and other predators. We seems to have more quail back then.

You hit the nail on the head.

So what happened to the honey bees and the meadow larks?

Well, it looks like the honey bee has become africanized, and there is no shortage of them down here. Bee swarms come buzzing by starting about this time every year. It is what I dread running into most in the brush. And we have meadowlarks down here too. Granted I haven't seen 'em around the house yet this year, but they are here. Honestly didn't know there was a shortage of either species.

All grassland bird species, pretty much, are on a nationwide decline since the same time frame. Prairie Chickens, quail, Dickcissels, bobolinks, Henslows sparrow, grasshopper sparrow, etc, etc, etc

Clean farming, urbanization, land clearing, are the major culprits with red imported fire ants, predation, and drought being excacerbating factors on an already stressed resource (quail).

Add to that patchwork land fragmentation and intact self sustaining quail populations are further and further apart so local extinctions are more common, and its more difficult for good habitat to be repopulated the further apart they are.
