If hunting for whitetail or mule deer would it be better to hunt the low bottom area or would you hunt the higher elevation areas?

That is going to depend on the ranch, the location, the year, the available food source and the species IMO.

If you just had to throw a blanket statement out, look for muleys 3/4 of the way up on the side of a hill/mountain. Now whitetails on the other hand don't seem to prefer a certain elevation really except maybe during the rut where they like to run flats because they can cover more ground in search for women. LOTS of variables to your question and can change from area to area drastically though

A mature buck might be a deer, but you can bet it's a totally different animal

Well thank you both, the land is around northfield and i just never hunted this area before so was just curious to how they might act... i know whitetail will stay down in the flats amd sometimes bed down on the side of the hills but wasnt sure how the mulies where, if they like the flats also or would rather stay in the high country.... thanks again,,,/.

I hunt Mule Deer west of Ft. Stockton. They will be were the food is at when you are hunting them almost always. Find that food and you will be successful. Mule Deer like open country for the most part. When weather is bad they will move into thicker areas. We are flat terrain for West Texas with a draw system through the middle of the ranch and deer are in the open areas more than in the thicker areas for most years. This past season they were in the thicker draw due to the drought.

Yes they will eat corn or protein just seems to take them longer to get on it if they have not been exposed to it. Wheat is the place to hunt in North Texas, espcially in very cold weather or late in the season after some hard freezes.

Also if you have any draws that come from the bottom land leading up to a food plot or crop field or any main food area they will use the draws to come from bed to food without having to leave cover on the way there....a funnel if you will...those are main i would be setting up on...at least for whitetail i would think the mulies would do the same but not much experiance with them

Sent PM...I have hunted that exact area for the last 2 years. It is very hit and miss, we had 2000 acres with 6 guys and out of the 2000 acres there was only about 200 that we every saw WT on. You can throw rocks at the muleys though.

They just don't get shot at since the season is only 14 days with no Does allowed. There is a wheatfield across from that house about 2 miles east of Northfield that on any given day you can count 50 Muleys, drive through there at night and it's dodge ball.

Send me a PM, but what area are you leasing? Myself or friends have leased most of the land around Northfield at any given time, I can give you the ins and outs.

Does the Pease River run through the property, if so you may hunt along the river. We hunt 1500 acres in the middle of Northfield. I hunt right along the river and hardly ever see mule deer around the river only whitetail. Most all the mule deer we see are up around the highway.

The only place I ever hunted with high and low land.
The low land was BY FAR the best along with the draws going from high to low. Deer bedded in the draws and fed in the bottoms.

Im anxious to see what size the whitetails and the mulies are out there? The mulies that we did see were all young ones, so hopefully the mature ones will be big...... JTFrisco do you know the other guys that hunt off cr 13? Do you know what they have been killing? What they have been seeing? thanks for any info..

They didn't shoot any bucks that I know of as they just didn't see that many WT's to begin with. It is very hit in miss, but your best best is to hunt the bottoms and draws as they won't get up on the top. I hunted 50 days last season and only saw them in the draws. We had guys there were setup on the tops and all they saw were Mule deer.
