Hey guys, I haven't been on here in awhile but I figured I would share some pics of a knife that I just finished. This was a special order from a customer.

Dimensions: Total length- 7-5/8", Handle length- 4", Blade length- 3-1/4". The hardware is brass, the handle is Cocobolo and the blade is made out of an old farrier rasp. I also made the sheath out of 8-9oz veg-tanned leather.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I am probably going to make a similar one out of S30-V stainless sometime. It will be awhile though because I have some stuff to do.

I am going to make a couple of bowie knives next week so I will try to get some pics of those posted when I finish.

This question reflects my total ignorance on the subject, and it is not my intention to step on anyone's toes. But is there an advantage to making a knife out of a file or rasp as opposed to one of the modern steels, such as S-30V? Or is it just the "cool" factor?

Nice one Andrew. That's going to make a very good working knife.

There is really no difference between a knife that is made out of a rasp or file vs any other type of steel. However, knife makers do have to be careful because some files and rasps are made out of mild steel that has been case hardened. I generally try to stick with name brand files that I know are made out of good steel. Also, sometimes I pretest a small piece of the file to be sure that it is worth making a knife out of.

Overall, the files are just a "cool" factor.

Just my 2.25 cents (adjusted for inflation).

Those raspy knives are fun to do. I have several Nicholson files and rasp in the shop. I just need the time to turn them into a knife.

The 'cool factor' pegged the meter on that one. Beautiful work, Andrew.
