OK fellow reloaders, I just started reloading .223 remington rounds from my AR and after cleaning the brass I noticed almost every piece has a small ding about half way down the body. First question is what is causing the ding? Second question is will this effect my accuracy? This isn't really a dent, but it might be protruding slightly inside the brass. I don't believe it is bad enough to cause a semi auto rifle not to cycle.

If this brass was shot out of an AR than the little ding is coming from the brass deflector. I dont know if thats the correct term for it but it's the piece that sticks out from the receiver behind the chamber. When the bolt opens to extract the brass it helps deflect the brass away from your face. It shouldn't affect anything.

America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

Those dings will size right out. And if it doesn't, about .05 seconds after primer ignition, there will be no more dent, until it hits the outside of the AR again. It's 100% normal, and a FL sizing will take care of the dents.

My sentiments exactly, but good to see others agree too

Hey Norm you should see the dings that my Cetme puts in some brass. I only shoot steel case ammo out of it now. This thing will eat up some brass and throw it a mile when it's extracted. You should be good to go with your 223 brass.

Yep, they are purty and straight between firing and hitting the deflector again...my 300 Blackout puts the dings in the open end of the shell...

Has anyone ever tried putting felt cloth on that deflector?

I've thought about something like that a time or two to see what would happen, but never done anything about it.

Yes, and it works well. Most shooters use the soft side of the velcro. I have thought about doing this on my bolt gun where it dings up the brass.
