I have a sig 556 and I am wanting to get a silencer for it. Send me in the right direction on the process and what kind I should get. I have no idea on the process of getting one and the rules and definately don't know what to look for as far as brand and model.

Sig p556 pistol 10 inch barrel NATO 5.56(223)

Not to put a damper on things, but that setup ain't gonna be quiet no matter what you do. Oh I suppose you can try and run subsonic .223 rounds but at the very best, I'm guessing you'll still need some kind of hearing protection with a short barrel and a round like the .223. You might want to try and go demo some suppressors before you decide to drop the $ needed to suppress your gun. Most .223s only get as good as hearing safe but are definitely not as quiet as a 300 Blackout, a .45, or some other round that stays subsonic by nature.

disagree with Dietrich.

I love shooting with cans and think subsonics are useless for the most part, especially in a rifle. The animals will still scatter after the shot regardless. And bullet won't expand properly going that slow, will more like an ice pick (we have been running a 300 whisper for years).

With supersonic its loud downrange but real hard to hear where the shot came from. Thats the beauty in it. I have had sounders run straight at me after I open up.

He is right its gonna be loud downrange when the sound barrier breaks, but still its a massive difference.

Recoil reduction, etc, many advantages to running a can. I got a YHM 762, run it on my 308 AR's, 556 AR's, 6.8, FAL and my 300 accuracy international.

It makes my 300 kick like a .223.

Its rare I have seen someone shoot a .223 with can and not want one.

(disclaimer, I owned cans way before I sold them)

I saw a guy at the range shooting a suppressed AR in 5.56. I could hear his gun from 10 lanes away, but mostly because it just sounded different. Sounded like a loud nail gun. Still pretty loud and he was wearing ear protection. Kinda turned me off to suppressors. For the $ and time to acquire one, I just dont know if they're worth it. But I think I need to hear a subsonic 308 or 300 before I completely write them off.

AR-10 with AAC 7.62SD. Hand loaded subsonic round.

My blackout with his suppressor sound similar. A little more noise due to the action cycling, but not much more.

I guess it's as they say, "once you go 300 Black, you never go back"! Personally, I wouldn't spend the money for the small performance and dB reduction on a .223. I would however, buy another 300 Black and suppress it all over again. When you think "movie quiet", that's a 300. The .223 *will never* be that quiet.

Cans do provide a bunch of benefits besides just signature reduction but most of those can be had with a good muzzle break(recoil reduction, decrease in muzzle climb, etc). I kinda doubt the OP is hunting hogs with a Sig 556 pistol anyway. I just think that if you're going to suppress something, you should use a round that was intended to be suppressed. Heck, you *can* suppress a cannon but really, what's the point? I'd much prefer the 300 or .45. Just my $.01 :-)

@Jeeper - You NEED to hear a 300 Blackout. That is what you will want after you get to see that in action. It truly is movie quiet.

Try JM Clements at Bandera Gun Club...ph 830 796-4510..he has the
license to order same and has several on his weapons..I helped him with a 308...On full house rounds you can shoot without hearing protection...Also you'll need your bbl threaded if it's
not already..I used Ronnie at Vais over in Hondo...he also is a
good guy and better than average gunsmith...plus he threads lots
of bbls for his breaks and is setup for same..Don Dial

I own a company that helps people set up NFA Gun Trust, This is the best way to own a suppressor. PM me if you would like more info.

Thanks,

Ryan

I second going with an NFA Trust if you decide to purchase a suppressor. I have one on my AR and it dampens the noise, but its still loud with full power ammo. Mainly it makes it hearing safe. I do enjoy shooting 22 long rifle cans though, cheap and quiet.

Jeeper....you probably still need ear protection at the range unless everyone is running cans on their firearms.

I witnessed a guy at the range with a suppressed 10/22 and it sound like a pellet gun.
