Gunmaster in Plano Tx has had one of my guns for 5.5 months now with no committed date they can start to work on my gun. I am pulling my gun Monday.

Docs Gun Shop in Carrollton quoted me 2 months

Rays Sporting Goods in Dallas quoted 2 weeks as they have 4 gunsmiths working at all times.

If you know of any other gunsmiths with a low turn time please post.

I would use Doc's in Carrollton no matter how long it takes that grumpy old fart to do his magic!

Doc's always done good work for me. Time was never an issue though as I was never in a rush and knew he was busy.

Some of the best gunsmiths do't work in a store, but work out of their garage/shop. I know you have been dealing with issues @ Gunmaster like everyone else.
My hunting group have used a gunsmith in Princeton for years. I had an issue with my Baretta AL-2 4 days before a trip to Coleman for a weekend Dove hunt, when myy AL-2 became a single shot. My son took it to him on Monday, and it was ready to go the same day.

Why does it have to be in the DFW area?

I sent my build to Phoenix Custom Rifles in Phoenix, Arizona. Cost a little bit in shipping ($50) round trip, but if I already spent a large sum in parts,I'm not going to fret over $50 to know when it will be done properly and promptly, plus I know he has a solid reputation.

I'm not saying you should use PCR, but find broaden your search to more than just the DFW area.

PCR is running about 3 months for full builds, plus they kept me constantly updated with pictures and information.

For a full blown build I'd use Doc's if you want to and he is the only guy I am familiar with in Dallas I'd trust to the job... I'v known him and used him for 30 years but for a lifetime keeper of a shooter I'd look at one of the bigger shops around the country as V 7-08 said.

One of the legendary shops I always dreram about doing a full build and you see referenced in reloading manuals everywhere is:
Lothar Walther Precision Tools, Inc.
3425 Hutchinson Rd
Cuming, GA 30040
770-889-9998 ph
770-889-4919 fax'
LotharWalther@mindspring.com for EMail
Lothar-Walther.com for website homepage

Lothar's father started Walther Firearms in Germany, and the company is now run by his son's. Be sure to look thru the history tab on the website.

Another shop I am looking at from the references I've gotten on another "channel" is:
IT&D Custom Gun, LLC
2229 Leisure Rd NW
Minerva OH 44657
330-868-6867
ITDCustomGun@ yahoo.com

These guys do a lot of barrel reboring and new barrel installs using Douglas Supreme Air Guaged barrels and their prices seem decent.

'Nuther guy bought out the old LeBounty Reboring operation in Idaho and moved it to Oregon I think. Now does good stuff under the name Clearwater and can do full 'builds or less if need be, I'll get you the contact info if you need it. The guys I read in the Pacific NWest speak highly of Clearwater.

Another legendary 'smith I like and have met back in my days in the GunBidnizz is Bill Wiseman out of College Station for barrels and 'builds -you'll se his name in the Reloading Manuals too as a barrel source, and course Hill Country in New Braunfels. E.R. Shaw is now doing more than just rebarrleing and building a good rep at lower prices but then his barrels are cheaper made too. Find Pac-Nor on the west coast and see what their prices are these days. Lots of excellent folks to do full builds if you got the bux to spend and take your time and do some research. My next full build will be a lifetime investment...and it may be cheaper and faster to simply order a Cooper set up to my choices at somewhere north of $3-4+K. Beer Budgets and 50 year old single malt tastes DO NOT go togther for me anymore.
Ron

BMD... those 1st 2 were from the note pad on my desk...and the rest from my lame duck memory.
I AM Gonna do build or rehab mo sooner than later prolly on a 264WMg, 338-06/338Wmg or 'nuther 9.3x62 on a Post War / Pre Nam euro bolt action. Gettin tired of fighting under a K priced factory junk issues since it costs as much or more to rehab the current crop of stuff built after the 1980's, I figger using some of the better craftsmanship evident in the '50 & '60s from Husqvarna, SAKO and FN I'll have 'em done RIGHT the first time....or just go on and spend $$$$+ bux on couple'ah custom ordered Coopers or AHR at under $5k + glass each and forget the DuBiels, Merkels and Steyr's.

I am more and more getting into Blue Steel & High Grade Walnut the older I get since I LOOK at'em lots more than I SHOOT them these days. However ya'll ought to SEE the disc'd SAKO 85 Hunter Grade 260 I picked up last fall...just need to spend some quality time feeding it enough to find out what it likes best.

X 10 I agree just don't wear your feelings on your shirt when you walk in. What he lacks in customer service he makes up in Gun Smith Knowledge and Craftsmanship. "You want it done right or feel warm and fuzzy inside and blow your head off?" Actual quote from Doc's

The canopy became his shroud; he hurtled to the ground. And he ain't gonna jump no more. Gory, gory, what a hell of a way to die, he ain't gonna jump no more!

There are a lot of good smith's that do not have a store front. If people post up what they need to have done, most on here can recommend other good sources. I also have several.

Euless Guns & Ammo does a great job for me, but they are popular and few months turn around.
