We've got some old family land in Falls County. I've been hunting the hill country forever, but never really tried in Falls County. That area east of I-35 (the blackland prairie) has, for most of my life, been assumed to not have deer (or at least many deer). But I'm hearing more and more stories - on this site and elsewhere - of big deer being killed on the blackland prairie (presumably because they are not hunted and have a lot to eat and drink on the blackland).
What would you expect me to find if I started feeding in Falls County? Any deer? At least hogs?
FYI - this property is east of Marlin (towards Groesbeck) and is about 500 acres of mixed improved agricultural property and hardwoods/unimproved acreage around a year-round creek.
Any experience or thoughts is appreciated.
Thanks.

I know there are more deer if you get a little farther east, but I usually think of Limestone County as being off the blackland prairie and in the post oak belt (which holds a fair number of deer). Do you really think it would be about the same?
Anybody have any experience with Falls County itself?

I live in the blackland prairie region in hill county and we own land here to not that far from navarro mills. The reason there are few deer is almost every bit of the land is plowed and used for growing crops but the little brush there is does hold hogs and alot of coyotes. If your 500 acres is native brush and trees you might have deer (you definitely have hogs) especially if you have hardwoods on the place like oaks. I seen what kind of deer blackland prairie can grow down at granger, they just have to have cover. 20 years ago there were no deer at granger, then a few got out of a guys high fence and now they're all around the lake.

Thanks, boss. We have some native brush/hardwoods around this big year-round creek, but we also have a lot plowed. I have seen hogs and coyotes - no deer, but haven't spent a lot of time out there. I guess the best way to find out is stick out a feeder and a game came and see what happens.
If anyone else has any observations around this area, I'd love to hear them.
