I have an opinion on this but want to know what y'all think.
I have a friend in Ohio who wants to come out to Texas to hunt pigs from a stand during hours similar to deer season. I think that no one can guarentee seeing pigs in a free range situation, Do you know a place that would guarentee them a shot opportunity under these conditions? Thanks

Well if he is bowhunting go see Skylar at the Diamond C Ranch.

I work hard, drink a little and hunt when I can.

I have been doing hog hunts for 3 yrs now. Nobody has killed a hog on our place after dark, till about 2 weeks ago. And the girl that shot that one did it about 30 min after dark. So yes, it can be done. Can I guarantee he will get a shot? No.
He could hunt a fenced in place and probably get a guarantee.

sqiggy, what would you say your success rate is? I assume you hunt over bait. I did mention they are not looking for a dog hunt. Thanks

That's a hard one to answer. A lot depends on the weather, the hunter, and the time of the month. If the weather is right, you can kill a hog in the morning and early afternoon, and yes, we hunt over feeders. This is the easiest way. Then you have the hunter factor. We take them in, show them the stand and let them have at it. But after we leave, if they get down and walk around to "scout" it out, their chances just dropped. I seem to get more hogs killed around a new moon, rather than a full moon. I can't remember what we did last year and I can't find my list from last year, but for this year, so far we've had 3 weekend hunts so far. Last weekend was a complete rain out. Hunters came in that Sat morning but didn't go out since it was pouring rain. Came back that afternoon, and again, it started to rain, they all got soaked and left. The other 2 weekends, a front blew in on both times, shutting everything down. Even with the bad weather, a total of 5 hunters in those 2 weekends, 1 guy missed, 2 hunters saw hogs but could not get a shot off, and 1 kill. I can't wait to see what we can do on a good weekend!!!

Sqiggy,
Thanks for that very realistic report. I agree with you. Around here we have to factor in if anyone has run dogs thru also. The guys from back east have heard all the remarks about high fence and won't go that route but traveled out here a few years back and ten of them had very poor results. This was a hunt thru Cabela's. Anyway I appreciate your straight up response.

Chief Joe I not sure how close to deer hunting times your friend wants to keep it but taking a decent colored light out with you put it over the feeder and just stay in stand 30 to 60 min. after dark. Staying that amount of time gives a good chance of getting that pig skirting day light to come in. And by the way ziggie was a great guy to hunt with. That guy seems to enjoy the hunt as much as the hunters even he's not doing the shooting.

Joe, we don't run dogs, never have and never will. This place is actually a "no fence"!!! Most of the property lines is a painted tree line or a tree line of tall timber and a brush thicket and what fence is up, is over grown with brush.
And Moe, still don't know what happened to the 5 o'clock bunch. They hit that feeder everyday like clock work. Guess it was a good thing, or your daughter might have not killed that monster hog. Gonna have to see about investing in some of those lights.
Got 6 guns coming in this weekend. Weather looks like it's going to hold, so I'm expecting them to stack'em up like cord wood.

You are talking about smart animals, their best incentive is food
and if sqiggy got feeders going for last several years local pig population knows regular feeding location and time. That helps. Also so does not running dogs and every day pressure.
