Hey Guys, just bought a Hornady LNL AP (mostly due to what I've read on this forum).
I've used 4831, 4831sc & 4350 for many years loading for my 270. With the new AP Loader I need to find a powder that meters consistently and has as good a performance as say the 4350. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I am concerned, H4831SC is the ultimate .270 rifle powder.

I can shoot damn near 1 hole groups with my model 700 with that stuff. 59.7 grns under a good 130grn bullet is a very good place to start.

I'd like to add that Chad will chime in soon. I believe he has a LNL loader and could tell you what a good ball powder would be to use.

I tried H380 at one time because I had a lot left over from my .22-250 but I never could get decent velocities with it. Sure meters pretty though.

Wow that is not as close as I have gotten with 4831SC, shows it pays to test your equipment with what you are planning to use.

Which powder thrower are you using? just curious, I switched ot one of the Hornady auto chargers last yesr snd really like it.

Prior to that I mostly used a Lee or RCBS powder drop and find the key for consistancy charge weights is to be consistant with tach throw and that includes tapping the despenser to settle the pwoder.

kmon1 - RCBS Uniflow. Did the tapping thing 2 times on the up stroke & 2 times on the down stroke. Don't have a baffle in the hopper put did fill to a mark half way up for both powders. Later I will use the auto powder thrower on the Hornady LNL AP (it has a baffle)and will let you know my results. Maybe the Hornady will be better with the 4831sc.

For the .270, O'd take a look at Ramshot Magnum. It will meter like H335.

ive tried a couple but i get the best results with H4831sc. 60 grains and a 130 grain bullet works great in my rem 700

Oh,the H4831sc meters verry well for me although I still trickle every round on a singe stage press for my bolt guns.

H4831, even the SC version, is too big to meter well. H4350 can meter good. It's a slick powder, and is fairly small. Alliant has some new powders out that are ball powders and temp insensitive. I've been using 2000MR for some 308 win loads with good results. They also make 4000MR, which is a magnum rifle powder. I would look at these 2. Ramshot Magnum would a decent one, also, with a heavy bullet.

Special thanks to Riverride & Chad for the Ramshot recommendation. Went with Ramshot Hunter because it's burn rate is sandwiched between 4350 & 4831. Went to the range yesterday and here are the results.

Found the load I was looking for.

59 grs looks good also

Barnes Load data says:
min - 59.0 = 3321
max - 63.5 = 3524

Since velocity decay is fairly linear is should be just over 3400. Got to get a Chronograph.
Did you notice the group at 61.0? 2 rounds in almost same hole. 3rd off a little might have been me. Going to explore that group further.
