Ok, so I went out to Elm Fork today to do a little test run.
Up to this point all I had run though my SIG556 was 55gr ammo.
Not happy with the grouping of the 55gr stuff, with the faster twist rate of my rifle, I thought I would try some of the heavier stuff and see what happened.
The goal of today's trip to the range was not to sight in the new scope but to find which load would group best.
Once I make a determination I will buy some more of that ammo, sight in the new scope and that will be the load I use from here on out.
Each target was at 50 yrds and has 20 rounds though it.

I like the way the Prvi 69gr, Hornady TAP-FPD and BVAC 69gr(Target 11) performed the best.
I think for the money though I'll probably end up going with the BVAC.

How fast did you shoot the 20 rnd groups?

How much time between groups?

Very nice, I have liked the BVAC 64gr SP Bonded bullets and wondered about the Tactical 5.56 BVAC load too.

Thanks

It didn't take me that long to run through each 20 rd mag.
I took my time and lined up each shot as best I could but I sure didn't take all day on each shot nor did I rush the process.
Some shots probably got squeezed off a little quicker than they should have but we all get carried away at the range from time to time when we're having fun. lol
The amount of time between targets was whatever it took me to walk down there, hang a fresh target, get back to the bench, load another 20 in the mag and get back to business.
Maybe 5-10 minutes or so.

I like 1, 2, 3, 5, 9 & 11 Best

#1 for a FMJ magazine, 9 & 11 for hunting and P/HD mags.

Need to see how the groups hold at 100+ yds, extended ranges.

Once I narrow down the selection and get zero'd in I'll jump out to 100 yrds.

Looks like that was a lot of fun. Think from this I am going to try some of the #9 and 11 in my 556 and see how it does.

CTD'd website says that on #11 "Note: Sierra does not recommend this bullet for hunting".
Why is that? Is it because it might be too damaging to flesh or what?

Matchkings and Hunting
by Rich Macholz

Every year we are reminded of the accuracy advantage MatchKings provide by hunters wishing to use them in the field. We don't suggest this application due to thin jackets, hard cores, and small meplat openings.

These design characteristics can cause premature expansion at close range, lack of expansion at extreme range, and a very narrow corridor of terminal performance. It is very difficult to take advantage of the MatchKings accuracy edge in the field under normal hunting conditions. Usually things are not just exactly perfect when that trophy presents itself. That means that odds are good that shot placement, while good, may not be perfect.

I dont know if its just me, but I would be rather upset if those were my 50yd groups. Especially when shooting match grade ammo. No offense

I can't stand when people say "no offense" after they just said something rude. Didn't your momma tell you if you can't say something nice keep it to yourself.

Well, we're not all snipers and expert marksmen.
As with anything, it takes practice to become proficient at something and I hope that one day I can post some pictures that you will approve of.

My buddy is looking at getting the SIG 556. I should tell him it has the 1:7 twist rate. Looks like your rifle liked some of the heavier grains though.

What I take away from the test is that if the target was a person I am pretty sure they would not walk away from any of the ammunition that you fired, looks like you had a great time and I am going to use some of your groupings to narrow down my selections as I have been looking for some ammo recently. Thank you for the excellent post with the pictures.

I'll be going back this next week to run the same test again minus the 69gr Fiocchi

I honestly don't recall, sorry.
I ended up trading the rifle off for a Kimber.

Thanks for the ammo report. I have a Sig Sauer flat top 5.56 M400 Enhanced Carbine 16" barrel with 1:7 twist with all Magpul accessories, forward grip and love it. I shoot Federal 55gr FMJ out of it and get excellent groups shooting this ammo at the range at 50 & 100. I shot iron sights for awhile (habit from being in the Marines) then threw a Bushnell Trophy tactical sight on it with red/green T Dot Reticle. I bought a rail mount and added a night vision infrared technology scope with adjustable red crosshair and remote so I can switch it out when I want. They are great AR's. Are you going to go hunting with it? Nice set up you got there with the free float. I need to add one and will probably install one next month. These guns are like Lego's lol. Will probably buy another one once the prices drop again so I can trick it out a different way. Don't want to add too much to this one and weight it down. Plus it's an excuse to get another one. Thanks again for the report.
