Start doing push ups.
Keep shooting a bunch too. You'll build strength pretty fast.

Push ups work your chest. You pull your bow with your back.
Get in a gym and do dumbbell rows lat pulls and more rows.
That will get you ready for high poundage in no time

As said above. Just shoot it everyday and you will be surprised at how fast you will be able to increase your poundage.

Shoot more and use a rubber band. Got one of my cousins one that was having the same issue. He couldn't shoot as much as he liked because of school, work and living in a neighborhood. Get one at any sports store that has a handle on both sides. Use the same form as you would if you were shooting. He even would tie it to the coffee table and draw back while watching tv. Good luck

Fastest way I have found was to shoot more. That to me is the best way, it strengtens the right muscles, and instills muscle memory in your brain to be consistant.

Only thing that I will addd is to turn your poundage down about 5 to 7 pounds below what you can just manage with some grunt. Then work on lots of arrows, giving your muscles a chance to harden in before you try to push your absolute limits. Pulled a muscle in the back of my shoulder once trying too hard to get in shape and set me back several months.
America is at that awkward stage. It's too late to work within the system, but too early to shoot the bastards. Claire Wolfe

Exactly don't push it, I've seen guys hurt theirselvs and never able to return back to shooting. It's never ever about poundage. I know some Korean kids eight years told that can spank everyone on this forum.

Any exercise that works the lats, rhomboids, rear deltoid and lower traps will help you gain strength in that area as well as using the bands as txshntr suggested. I also agree with shooting more often and gaining strength gradually, however, I would advise that if you are right handed that you also strengthen the left side because you WILL develop muscular imbalances that can cause a problem later. While your stabalization muscles are "activated" during the pull phase they are not "worked". I hope that makes sense. Also,...at a certain poundage your arrows reach a terminal velocity so increasing poundage after that is just for show or bragging rights and could lead to injury...bascially it becomes pointless to pull more than say 70lbs...

so your saying my bow would be just as fast pulling 72# as it would pulling 80#?

Military press/overhead press will help as well.

That's what I've always heard. My Dad taught me to shoot and has always told me that anything over 70# is a waste of time and basically just a bragging right. As shoulders are very prone to injury I would assume it would be a wise choice so you could enjoy archery for a very long time. I trust his opinion not only bc he is my father, but bc he grew up shooting with two other brothers that used to win tournaments all over TX and is great friends with Mike Palmer who was a national archery champion since his youth.

Shoot every day. A year ago I got Wendy a DXT and we had the limb bolts backed out to about 48lbs. I made her stand in the garage and shoot every day at a block target just to build her strength and perfect her form. Now she shoots 58 lbs in a hunting situation and can draw a full 60 but its not very comfortable. Its just like every thing else you get better or in this case stronger with patience and time.
