I think anything in the relm of .243, 7-08, 25-06, .270 would be just fine...i got my .270 when i was that age

in a full size rifle they are not that bad.

in a short little model 7 they have some kick to them.

My son is 11 and saved up his money and purchased a Weatherby vanguard s2 in this caliber this year and absolutely loves shooting this gun. He killed his first deer when he was seven with a .223 followed by 5 more deer with this gun. He then shot an elk with a .243 and wanted his own gun. He said he will never shoot another caliber for big game. He is 5'4" and 135 pounds at 11 and the recoil does not bother him at all.
