just curious if this is enough knock down power for mostly hogs. i got the chance to get one brand new(well sorta, it's been in storage for xx years) for $99 and found a synthetic stock and scope mount combo for $85, then I would just need a scope. so would this be worth it. i could even keep the gun stock and just mount a scope and off i go. the main reason i like this route is it's cheap and ammo isn't much. then when i get home from deployment right before christmas, i see a new 243 with goodies in my future.

Should be plenty of knock down power for pigs. Just be careful with those scope mounts cuz I hear they are a pain to put on sometimes...

i actually just found a modern scope and scope mount, that looks just like the sniper scopes from the 40s which i think would be pretty cool, was thinking new stock, with new old style scope. they also have a 3 sides rail scope mount, that i thought might be cool to mount the scope on top, and a sure fire on the side for night time use. all just thoughts though, but i was just adding everything up and for about $300 i can have a complete custom 762 so for my first rifle that might not be bad

Are you talking about a 7.62x54? Sounds like your are looking at a Mosin Nagant rifle. Among others, there are also 7.62x51 (AR 10) or 7.62x39 (SKS and AK)...regardless any all can be good calibers especially for hogs. WOuldnt be my first pic for coyotes, but it certainly will do the job if you hit them. Sounds like you're excited about the price, so go for it and enjoy it!

whopps sorry i must have missed that part, i thought i put it in there. yes i am refering to the mosin nagant Big5 has them onsale for $99 and yes i am excited, especially since i'm on a tight budget right now. i will be deploying in a couple months and plan to budget enough to have about $700 for a nice complete rig when i get home. but with the guys at work always at the range and going hog hunting i figured i could swing it, plus it would be a piece of history. so i look at it this way

$99 for the gun, burlap sack to wrap around and really go the old school sniper look(just for fun) ammo is cheap, some practice i'm good to go

or

$99 for the gun, $50-65 for synthetic stock, $30-40 for scope mount, $99 ish for new scope, so for $300 a custom rifle

maybe not the best, most accurate, coolest looking rig, but it would be mine, and wouldn't break the bank

so am i crazy? waste of money? or just go for?(i think the last one)

No you don't, hoss. I've got one with your name on it for free. I've been talking to another member about trading it, but nothing has been settled and I'd like for you to have it as a small token for your service. It's not perfect, but it should be a shooter and I'll throw in some ammo as well. P.M. me or contact me @ abilenegripworks@hotmail.com

Sean, these old Mosins shoot 7.62x54R, aka the Russian ought-six. Hopefully Mr. Murtaugh will get a lot of use out of the old gal, he's a real nice guy with a beautiful family.

i know it's been little over a week but i would like to thank toolman, for given me a mosin nagant, been really busy at work and at the range, have shot about 60 rounds so far, and just about got her dialed in, and i am no expert but she can shoot. i even hit the 100 yard steel target a few times, and not to say i am good shot becuase i'm not really, but there were 2 guys next to me at the range with AR style rifles with scope and they weren't exactly hitting it, and i was so that kinda made me feel good, please dont' take this as being cocky it just felt good that's all. so thank you again toolman, i am very greatful

7.62x39 should be fine, scope mount should be riveted to left side of the receiver those scope mounts hold up well

I love my Mosin. She's ugly, but she can shoot!

I've thought about putting on of those reproduction PU scopes on it. I think it would make for a really cool conversation starter at the range or the lease.

Enjoy your first Milsurp rifle!
