ever think about getting them sold at the Sweetwater Rattlesnake roundup or there is a place out on I-20 called Brazon River Rattlesnake Ranch, just inside Parker county, just past 281...he should buy them if they are in good shape

Used to sell my snakes in Kingsville, to the cancer research center. At that time we were getting 9.35 per lb. Last time I sold, we took down 1100 lbs of live rattlesnakes. The research they were doing at that time was using rattlesnake venom to destroy cancerous growths without surgery. Since rattlesnake venom is a Hemotoxin (destroys flesh) I guess the idea was to inject it into the growth and allow it to eat or destroy from the inside, reducing the chances of it spreading. Not to sure how they localized the venom to that specific area, without it also spreading and cause collateral damage.

Yes! A Weatherby does kill them deader.

All kinds of reasons:

Good To Eat.

Skins can be used for belts/hat bands/covers for fishing rod grips/wallets.

Good To Eat.

Venom can be used in research.

Good To Eat.

Some folks just like raising them/zoo specimens.

Did I Mention They Are GOOD TO EAT!!!

Is there any difference in taste if you kill them after they are ready to strike?

About 15 years ago we killed one, skinned it out, and saved the meat. At the time, my father had an old mexican man who worked for him. The man asked my father the same question. He said if they snake was calm or just slithering away when he killed it, it would be good to eat. But he said if the snake was mad and ready to strike, he said it wouldn't taste good. He said he could still use it for "healing".

Anyone know of any mexican folklore regarding the rattlesnake?

The old man was 72 and broke his femur near the hip. The doctors here put a cast on it and he went back to mexico for treatment. Once he got the cast off, he never had a limp or anything and was still working at least part time with the cast on. The old man finally died last year at 90 something.

I have never noticed any difference and I have had them from half asleep when I shot them, to pissed off trying to bite me.

As for folk remedies I am sure they do, but I ain't ever heard any of them.

I do know that the hands out on the ranch I do the javelina hunts on in Pecos county will skin them out, let the carcass dry and hang it up inside the bunk house, I guess it is supposed to keep other snakes from crawling into the house?

Are you going to clean up under that old house at the camp? Let me know when you go out there and I will give you a hand. Beer, guns, and rattle snakes sounds like fun.

SNAKE FARM JUST SOUNDS NASTY! My family has a place near Woodson Tx. There's a snake den 30 yards from where we camp. Three years ago we killed 28, last year we killed 30.This year only 4 or 5. If someone comes on here and says they pay good money for snakes I'll kick myself. We wrap them in bacon and jalapenos. Taist like chicken but a little chewy.

No, Not Really, I Just Say That Chit For The Hell Of It.

Yes their good to eat.

The meat tastes similar to frog legs, cooks up white and is kind of tough.

I usually corn meal it and fry it like catfish.

I used to tan their hides and sell them. I always intended to eat one but once I'd get that smell on my hands, that desire would disappear. Thay don't stink as much as a Coyote but once you get that oily smell on your hands, it's hard to get it off.

I never shot them because most I got were off blacktop roads in the night when they were soaking up residual heat. I used an old folding Army shovel to pop their heads off. Once you fool with them long enough, they'll uncoil and try to get away. When they straightened out...pop.

Now that I think back on it, being in the middle of nowhere messing with mad rattlesnakes in the dark at just a few feet away might not have been one of my most smartest ideas. As long as you keep a distance equal to the snakes length, you're safe. I never did have one try to "run" at me no matter how mad they were.

I killed one on the steps of our cabin late one night. Figuring I'd go ahead and skin it before I went to bed, I poked him near the tail with the tip of my knife. He immediately struck me with the stump where his head used to be. I threw him about 10' and my buddies got a good laugh out of it. I kept poking him with the knife and he kept striking me. No matter how hard I tried, I could't keep from throwing him down every time. Finally I just threw him in the ice chest to wait till the next day. Made me wonder where their brains really are. Someting was telling him to strike and where to strike. His head was about 5' away so maybe he was using telepathy.

Hey Primitive, we used to go to my buddies ranch out past Abilene and hunt Rattlesnakes that way. We took a little Ruger .22 and would just go along the black top popping a few here and there (the larger ones) in the head and tossing them in a cooler on a kid's wagon (easier to move the cooler a 1/4-1/2 mile that way). Then his dad would skin 'em and clean them while we would be out farting around on the 4 wheelers during the day. I'll tell you that snake jerky was ok, but snake stew and snake kabobs were the bomb!!! Best snake meat I ever had though was slow cooked or smoked (like bbq) because it softens up the meat. Its just like smoking a brisket, if you cook it quick, its really tough and chewy, but slow cook it at 250 degrees for a few hours, and it just melts in your mouth!

Now that I think about it, here's a Haskell County rattler from our 07 Dove hunt. Since I'm the paparatzzi, neither guy is me.
