Some new pics i got from tha last two weeks. Got one decent buck thats hard to make out from the bad fog we have been gettin but also got a pic of a strange buck that has a kinda palmation going but also looks like he may be a stag buck. My brother saw him once late in the year and told me he wasnt sure what he was looking at. The deer has been twisting my brain and shows signs of being old as dirt but still just seems like a young deer at first glance...cant tell if he still has velvet or could have just goten sick but thought i would let yall see and get some more opinions.

What makes you think he is old?

Big ones line-up, little ones bunch-up

Deep jaw, big face, lots of set to his hip, stained halfway down his hocks, big sholder structure even though he is poor looking

I think I agree about him being older. Looks like he's not in very good shape, and trying to morph his antlers into caribou style. grin

I agree with him being older also, but I'm not convinced he's a stag. I've not had many experiences with stags, but the ones I have seen seem to be fatter than a normal deer in similar age. Definately not the case here, but who knows...

I see the same things you describe that makes him look old.
Doesn't look like he's grown into his legs yet so I would lean towards younger deer that has been or is sick or injured.
A pedicle infection will sure sap the life out of one and make the body & antlers look poor.

If he looks like that next year shoot him in the face.

I cut the contrast all the way up on them so you can see them better...

Honestly looks like a run down 3 1/2 yr old to me. Looks like he's in velvet still but only grew for like a month. Pretty odd

A mature buck might be a deer, but you can bet it's a totally different animal

The buck with velvet on both beams seems to have been sick during the summer velvet growth period. He looks to be healthier now but still not in great shape. I would call him a 3.5 yr old. If I were to make a guess, I would say he got EHD or Blue Tongue but was able to get over it or could have been injured/sick during the rut the past season and was still down in the summer time. Also, without being able to see his hooves in the grass and standing water he could have also had foot/hoof rot during the last year or so, but does not seem to show it from those pics.

I say that is a younger deer that had an injury or illness. He doesn't look like an old buck, just a poor buck
