Population is good. Quality is very weak. Maybe the antler restrictions will hopefully help. There are some real nice bucks near Richland Creek WMA

My dad took a 18 point with a 24.5" inside spread that scored 176" on that place. There was also a 10 point that scored in the 150's taken off that same place a few years before. The key was to be in the woods in October for bow season because thats when they were really runing the does!

Generally speaking, if you hunt Freestone County and have 5 guys on your lease, you can safely assume there are about 30 people hunting it. I hunted there for 13 years and there was not a year went by that we (or the GW) didn't catch somebody poaching it. Everybody jokes about East Texas poaching but most of it is rooted in truth. Another problem was packs of "wild" dogs. They weren't really wild because most were wearing collars but the way they chased deer, it looked like they were trained to do it. I personally probably killed 15 dogs in that time myself and I know the other guys killed a bunch. I had a Pit Bull charge out of the brush at me one day and I shot him down the throat at less than 10 yards with my 270. All I could see in my 4x scope was his tongue when I fired. He rolled up to within 6 feet of me dead. In 13 years, the biggest buck we ever killed probably scored about 110 (generous estimate). Hunting from October till January, we'd usually see about 3 or 4 bucks. Between year-round hunting (poaching), dogs, and mediocre genes that's about all there was.
Other than that, Freestone County is a great place to hunt!
Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practice makes permanent.

I've hunted Freestone for ~30 years on family land. Its getting alot better, because of recent changes in land ownership, management styles, and on a voluntary basis.... AR's. My family and some neighboring properties have practiced management for the past 10 years or so, and thats made it much better than it used to be.
Theres still a good bit of poaching that goes on, but not as much as there used to be. Hogs have REALLY taken root there too. It'll never be the hill country, but it isnt bad, either.

I should have 2nded the food plot idea. I've been planting oats and a mix of other stuff for the past 5 years or so, and its really made a difference in what I see. Soil tests are critical to getting the ph right. I had to put down a BUNCH of lime to get that stuff to grow well.

I've hunted family land in Freestone off and on my whole life. Having a kid kinda pushed me out of the hill country lease and back onto the "farm" for my hunting. I have been truly amazed over the last five years at the number and overall quality of the herd. And since I/we started planting spring and fall plots every year since we've been back, the numbers and quality look even better than when we began.
And I'll agree on the poaching and pressure issue as well. Freestone used to be the "black bean" county in Tx. The wardens we spoke to last year said Leon county is now one of the worst to draw. We don't hear near the amount of gunshots that we did when I was a youngster hunting freestone.
I tried this last year, and got quite a few responses but no-one showed. How about a Freestone hunter THF gathering this year? Sam's was the intended spot last year. I'm good with anywhere though. Let's meet up one evening and all eat a bite together somewhere. Who's in?

I just applied for a job in Freestone County. I would love to meet with a few hunters in the area if things work out. So, I'm in, Pscho, if things work out down that way.
