Im taking the kids fishing for rainbow trout next weekend. We have never caught or eaten rainbow trout before. What is the most common way to cook it? Not really looking for different and exotic, just want to try it the most common way to get an idea of how it tastes. Any help would be great!

I've always fried it just like normal. Make a small cut under the bottom jaw, then run it down the belly. All the entrails should pull out with the gills. You can also brush it inside and out with olive oil and sprinkle an Italian herb mix on it, then bake it 10 min a side at 350. You could grill it too, in a foil pack with a little butter. It's an easy fish to cook.

Do you filet it, or leave the skin on?

Just watch out for the little bones. Hard to see them. Pull the meat off carefully after you cook it. Go through it with a fork to try to find the bones. Rainbow are delisious fish.

gut and gill the trout, leave heads and skin on. put lemon slices and salt, black pepper in the body cavity, butter them up and wrap in foil. put on a hot grill for about 5 min and turn over for about 3 min more, ENJOY. thats the only way i cook them anymore

I see no reason to leave a head on a fish other than for presentation, so I cut the head off, remove gills and guts, scrub the outside down a little to get slime off.

Then I either batter and fry or season and grill.

I open it up and grill just on the skin side. All it needs is salt, nothing else! Sea salt if possible.

If you're cooking it outside on a fire, this is an easy and great way to make it:

Yeah, that's salmon. I usually eat trout when I am camping. I fry the bacon, save a little grease and fry the trout and and egg at the same time in the pan. Great meal. Just remember there are pin bones that will need to be removed if filleted.

After gutting a rainbow you can hold it by the head and body, crack the head upwards, and peel the skin right off. Easy as pie!

The skin has never bothered me though. If baked, it peels off very easily, if fried you never notice it.

By leaving the head on it seems to not let the meat dry out as bad.

The only way I've ever cooked it is to grill it. Cut the head and remove the guts, fill the cavity with butter, slices of onion and some lemon. Lay more rings of onion and lemon on the to. Wrap in foil and grill about 5 minutes then flip for another 3 or 4 minutes.

After you remove it from the grill, the skin will come off pretty easily.

Pretty much how I've always done it, but w/o the lemon. I never have liked lemon on my fish.

Well, we caught 8 trout this morning. Man it was cold out there. I slit the belly, gutted and removed the gils. We are trying the batter and pan fry route. Next time will try the grilled way. Having them for dinner will let yall know how they turn out. Thanks!

Baked three last night for dinner myself. Just a simple butter, onion, and garlic mix in the cavity and slathered on the skin. Take it out halfway through and drip lemon juice on the skin, really gives it a nice flavor.

For me, the simpler the better. It's so mild that I like some OliveOil or butter, lightly salted and peppered. Gutted, rinsed and in foil for short time. Awesome.

Yep, I remember Jusa (if the last name is Suvanto). Those were some crazy times, back when we were all young.

Smother with mayonnaise inside the cavity and out. Sprinkle on seasonings. Bake 30 minutes @ 350 degrees.
