where are the vitals on a oryx. from what I understood they are a tad foward. but just want double check. i will be shooting a 7mag so i was thinking just take the shoulders out.
just want to double check. thanks for the input

That shot will do it. Just make sure it's in the lower third of the chest/shoulder.

Yes, shoot low....but DO NOT shoot behind the shoulder. Shoot it THROUGH both shoulders.

I'm actually going on a scimitar oryx hunt this Friday-Saturday. I have a savage .243 that I shoot with 95 grain ballistic tip hand loads. I've killed several whitetail with this rifle without any problems. Will this be sufficient for an oryx? I know that most everything comes down to shot placement...but I just wanted to get some thoughts from people who guide these types of hunts.

Get that shot placement right .243 should be ok Also with the right bullet

Hey Drop Tine look at Africahunting.com theres a shooting placement guide but no Fallow, Axis but theres other antelopes etc on it. I always shot my axis and fallow like reg WT

You should be ok its a little light though for my taste. Your ballistic tips may not be what you want, you may want something that will hold together better core loks are cheap and work great. Remember shot placement is important but these animals are still much bigger than a white tail. They won't bleed much with a bullet that size but they have pretty thin skin and are not one of the toughest to bring down like the gemsbuck.

At cabelas there is a book of exotics and african game that has a photo of each animal in it with vitals etc. I have loaned it out to a friend and cant think of the name but it is worth the money.

ya'll are crazy for recommending a .243 with core-lokts for shooting an oryx.
get a real rifle and load it with some stout bullets.
For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Not really recommending it but sounds like that's what he's going with. I would use Barnes or noslers but at this point that may not be an option since the hunt is so close. Core loks are easy to find and he can get sighted in with the m quickly plus I wouldnt recommend ballistic tips on any animal that big . I've shot core loks with no complaints and have heard nothing but good things about them. Trophy is right though bigger cal would be my option as well just trying to help with what you got.

never hunted or shot oryx but there is nothing wrong with using a .243 IMO. some people just like to tell you you gotta go big and overkill everything. heck the first elk i ever killed in colorado i shot with my .243. i think it will be more than capable of doing the job if placed right.

243 will work but margin of error goes up and I've guided a ton of oryx hunts unless my oryx are special don't use a core lokt there success rate is non existent on anything but thin skinned like a wt. Use a partition they make a 95 gr 6mm or the 95 gr gmx or sst.

I've killed a few. I would just be ready for a follow up. Mine took 2 from my 300 and 3 more from a 30-30 before he dropped

I just took downa pretty good sized cow yesterday and I used a 30-06 with soft point 185 gr bullets. I shot her right in the middle of her shoulder slightly up and the bullet came out high on the opposit shoulder. She went right down and quickly expired. The guide was really impressed with the 30-06 and so was I. You don't have to go bigger but it sure does make things easier.
