why is it that when I want to buy live exotics from ranches their prices are high, But I can go to the auction and buy cheaper. If there was a ranch that sold exotics at a reasonable price, I wouldnt need to go to the auctions and could cut out the middle man. Also I could continue buying more livestock from them! And these are not gold class animals!

You might try the YO Ranch Auction April 27th-28th. They put on a good auction and you can actually view animals and know who you are buying from. You can meet and talk to the animals owners in many cases. The rest are just auctions were you might get a good deal but not know who you are buying from. I would also suggest you call Terry Caffey at Eden. No one will be more honest with you and treat you better than him. http://caffeybar6gameranch.com/Welcome.html

I meant to say that I wouldn't buy animals from a regular exotic auction (such as RAZ or Huntsville). The Y.O. sale and other similar auctions are another story. I would not hesitate to buy from a well-organized auction like that.

If you're starting from scratch, it's good to know what you're buying in terms of genetics - there are some fairly significant differences on the species you mentioned, and the differences can easily be seen looking at the 3-4 year olds.
I have gone to and bought from plenty of auctions. Nothing wrong with them, but they do stress animals alot more than straight capture, transport, release. Plus, you have no idea how long the animals have been captured, IMO, the shorter they are in close quarters with other animals, the better - less chance for disease etc. Price is lower at auction, but risks are generally higher.
YO filters their animals pretty well, and you rarely see poor stock come thru. RAZ will run anything thru the chute, you'll get some good stock in there, but you'll also have alot of junk come thru.

BTW, have any of y'all been participating in www.wildlifebuyer.com? It's Harwood's 'ebay for animals' might be a happy medium - auction format, but direct catch and transport.

Not knocking RAZ. I have sold stuff there. That being said the stress factor at Raz compared to the YO cannot be measured. The YO has completely enclosed cubicles for the different animals and sellers. You look through holes cut into the cubicle to view the animals. They do not get stressed like they do in large pens. At Raz every ones Axis are in a pen.Every ones Fallow are in one pen and such. Animals may cost a little more at the YO but it's worth it in the long run.

actually I know breeders that bring animals to both auctions (raz and YO) so they are same ranches. The problem is that these auctions loose animals and the ranch owner takes the hit. Why not sell exotics at reasonable prices. You should see the quotes I have from ranches selling animals. you can't tell me a 2 yr old axis for $950 is a good price.

you can't tell me a 2 yr old axis for $950 is a good price. Nope....that is an AWFUL price (unless we're talking about something out of the ordinary, like a 30" 2 yr old or something)

wow. I would post his information so people could look out for him. that seems like a reasonable thing to do. send me a PM please so I dont buy from him.
Yea, I thought that price was high for these ranches. I deal with exotics and I am just looking for an honest ranch to do business with.
