So I moved here last summer, and hoped to get some quail hunting in. Not much of that happened, so I'm looking for some advice for Texas quail hunting, as I feel awful that my little Britt hasn't got much work in. I bought an Oklahoma license, since I live North of DFW, and got out twice. Saw nothing. I don't see any real options for public land near to DFW. Are hunting leases worth it? it seems that if you are not a Deer or Hog hunter, there's not much out there. I'm not really interested in a day lease, outside of reps for the little girl. I don't mind getting skunked occasionally, that's the difference between hunting and harvesting. Where does one look for a decent lease for quail? I'm usually a once a week hunter, but it looks like it might have to be 2 to 3 day trips to OK and KS every other week. Also, there's really not that many quail hunters out there. If I find out that people hunt, I ask. And I have yet to meet who admits it......

When I lived in Fort Worth, I went to a preserve near Jacksboro. PM me if you want the info. The birds flew GREAT. Best pen raised I've ever seen.

where did you used to hunt and what kind of birds I moved here from washington state, where I would hunt quail, pheasant, grouse, and partridge. California (valley) quail and pheasant were the big ones. I've also been known to spend some time in a duck blind. I did go out with a guide called duks r us since moving here. Those guys are a class act, if you are north of dfw I recommend them highly, they kept me from calling the season a complete loss.

There is a bird dog training area in the LBJ grasslands (north of Ft. Worth) where you can release pen-raised quail. I realize that's not what you asked about, but it will be good practice for next season.
I'm not quite sure how the release area works. Do you have to buy a permit?

Dude if you just moved to Texas from WA you are in for a HUGE letdown. I'm from DFW but I lived in western WA (port orchard-navy) for 2 years...I was in hog heaven up there...I hunted grouse in the olympics, quail near wenatchee, and ducks all over the state...I also fly fished 2-3 time a week.
Hunting is big bidness in texas so forget about public spots...especially for upland bird hunting. You also moved here during possibly the worst year for quail ever.
Ok enough bad news...for quail, if you are serious you need a lease. Look west (rolling plains). Most people say you need about 1000 acres per hunter...and the going rate is maybe 2-3 bucks per acre just for quail, so expect to pay 2-3k for a lease. There are very few wild quail in east texas. You can also get into birds in Oklahoma and kansas if you are willing to drive.
For pheasants you are probably better off going to Kansas...there are pheasants in the texas panhandle but Kansas isn't much farther and the state has a decent public hunting program...unlike TX.
A lot of people hunt ducks around here on the big lakes...it gets pretty competetive...lots of hunters.

You need to get together and exchange huntin spots.. http://www.texashuntingforum.com/forum/u...ing#Post2978490
