I'm pretty bad about keeping one in the chamber while in the truck if I'm by myself. I used to in the days of 3.25 lb triggers but nowdays at 2 lbs I usually have the bolt partially open and then chamber a round as I pick it up. Thats why I set all mine to 12 lbs and do finger pull-ups 2 months straight before season starts.

Barney Fife style. Empty gun and a single bullet in my pocket.
Seriously, I chamber a round, safety on, once I get settled in the blind.

I have very delicate shoulders. It makes sure I have it nice and snug before the recoil kicks in...

And at your age sometime you forget to load it....... And at your age it sometimes goes off and you kill a deer you regret. I like how that keeps coming up - some things are harder to live down than others. Accidental discharge killing a 5yo 136" 10pt just over 400yds; his name was 'innocent bystander'

I should have held out for an older than dirt 8pt ive been chasing since '09, he went stupid this year. (or could have always been stupid, I just repositioned a stand looking down a pipeline and apparently there's one heck of a buck crossing down it a ways paralleling a creek and our hay field)

My hunting Bud and I have cull shot several ranches over the years....our weapons are unloaded with the bolt handle up...never load until out of the window...We have videos of bucks and does in feeders with us playing music on the boom box or jeep under the blind...shooting deer...with others in the feeder pens, who usually walk a little ways away and come right back...Unlike the crap that these hunting TV shows with everyone whispering, ect.. It isn't unusual for he and I to have a 22 in their to shoot rabbits, quail, ect...CB's work well..
I have hunted with folks who are wound way to tight...and forget that this is for fun...not many people are feeding their familys with venison, because it's about $30 a lb up.....and a lot more if you are leasing....or paying for a guided day hunt ect...
Do NOT trust safetys...ect...teach your kids to leave the weapon unloaded unless pointed at a target...most of us don't jump shoot deer anymore...DD

While it would seem that hunting blinds with multiple hunters are very dangerous and would be the source of many shooting accidents, the numbers say otherwise. I suspect it's because hunters recognize the need to be very careful when others are so close by.
The numbers show that most accidents happen once the hunters leave their hunting areas and carry their loaded firearms with them. Such was the case several years ago here in the Houston area when a duck hunter laid his loaded shotgun in the bed of his truck. The gun went off and killed him when his dog jumped into the truck bed and stepped on it. And I can remember the man who accidently shot his grandson when his shotgun trigger got caught on brush.
When you consider that most hunting accidents happen away from hunting blinds and stands, the safest practice is to simply wait until you get into your stand or blind to load your firearm, and to ALWAYS unload or chamber it before you leave it.

Once I make it into the stand, I load one in the chamber and keep it on safety.

I have gotten worse about it as I have gotten older, but if I am hunting by myself I usualy walk to the blind with 4 in the belly/magazine, chamber one when I sit down. When I get down I leave it loaded and on safety till I get back to camp then put all ammo back in the magazine. When hunting with others, especialy people who are learning, kids and my fiance and such I unload it all the time... the do as I say not as I do kinda thing.

Chamber one when I get into the blind and leave it on safety. Then put the one in the chamber back into the magazine before I leave the blind. I leave the one in the magazine because I usually still hunt my way back to camp.

Single shot has one round ready to go but the hammer not pulled back yet. I have a 4 inch window ledge and the bottom of the gun is flat so I leave it in the window pointing towards the feeder so all I have to do is lean into the gun and pull back the hammer.
