How long does it take an Axis buck's antlers to reach their maximum length starting from nothing? Thanks in advance!

Depends on genetics, feed available, etc but most are about a like a WT and peak around 5-7 yrs of age IME.

I guess I should have rephrased the question!! After the buck sheds it's antlers then begins to grow his new set, how long from the beginning of the growth until full length? Thanks for the quick response, though!

About 70% of the axis will shed around the first of Dec or so. They start to regrow almost right after that and are pretty much done by May. Best time to hunt them is usually around Father's Day weekend as most of them will be in hard horn and prettiest color at that time.

So they all/most drop them around December? I always were told that each buck dropped their antlers around ththe date they were born. See, you learn something new all the time. Thanks.

For the most part the herd I was working with did. Some in that group would start in Nov to shed and others the first of Jan for the range but most around first part of Dec. This was with about 1300 hd. The rest were scattered through out the year. Most of the fawns (70%) were born in that herd in Jan, Feb, and March also. Some herds will be different I am sure.

That's cool to know. I don't really know a ton about them, so all I have to go on is what I had been told. Thanks for the info. It will help when planning my first Axis hunt.

The more I hear the more I want one! I sure appreciate the lessons learned from these posts!

Most mature Axis Bucks sport 6 points and a balanced rack..I have seen some very large 8 pointers around Tarpley and the Williams Creek area a few years ago when I was working on some cattle pens on a ranch there...I think these may be somewhat rare..Don
