Has anyone planted or tried to plant a food plot in Sonora Texas? If so, what type of seed did you use? How do you get it to grow? What type and how much fertilizer did you use? Did you have to prep the soil with chemicals?

Any recommendations are welcome too.

If it rains anything is possible. grin If you can find an area with enough soil depth and can keep livestock of it, you could try something along the lines of Lab Lab in the late spring if you have a tractor and farming equipment and enough acres to plant. Would not even try it unless you had enough soil moisture after preparing land to plant. My experience in drier country is that when it rains a lot deer won't eat a food plot very well as they prefer native forages....when it they need a food plot you can't get enough rain to grow one.

If you have enough dirt to get it to start growing and enough water to keep it growing all the time keeping critters from eating it until it can survive, you are good to grow.

That being said, a rough rule of thumb down here is you'll be lucky to get something to actually grow about one out of every 5 years.

thanks for the input. I kind of figured the area would be tough for growing food plots without an irrigation system.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

beewild bundleflower worked decently for us and sometimes chicory. You can call pogue agri partners and talk with them, very helpful guys. We were southwest of ozona several years ago. Nothing is guaranteed but if you catch it right it can pay off nicely.

The landowner of our lease there plants Wheat in a small fenced off area for the deer. It's only about 1 acre. When we get rain it's awesome but that's not but every few years.

It's going to be tough getting anything to grow in semi-arid desert land like Sonora. Soil depth and quality are key.Rainfall,or lack thereof is the controlling factor in an area such as this. Ryegrass seed is inexpensive and deer hardy. Throw it around any low areas around your feeder and under trees(if you have any). Just about anything will grow under certain conditions (meaning Rainfall) That's dry country out there. I wouldn't spend a bunch of money, hoping for rain...My 2 centavo's
