Interesting... those do look quite a bit darker than any I've shot in other states. Haven't shot any in Texas... yet... Is that coloration common in your area?

The same morning I shot the bottom yote, I went down the road about 4 miles to another pasture, got set up and called in three. One of which was BLACK, not dark gray and brown swirled like these, but black with slight silvery tinged hair. It was beautiful and lived to see another day and hopefully pass along its genetics. The pics here are just dark coloration, but the black one that got away I truly think was melanistic...or was mixed with Texas's elusive "black panthers"...I hear those are pretty plentiful? :P

Those would make great looking rug or wall full skin mounts side by side. Hope you saved the hides. I have caught a couple in South Texas that were dark shaded but nothing that dark.

I'm pretty sure they are all coyote, may have some dog genes from way back when, but I don't think they are half and half at least. Other that color no real dog traits about them. I think it is a regional quality of coyotes. I have seen numerous coyotes that are deep brown or charcoal gray like these and this week one that was complete black all within a relatively close distance to each other. It is really unique for sure. The larger and darker male I sent to the taxi for a full body mount. I am hoping it turns out great and natural looking.
