I have got a remington model 700 270 that wont group. Im shooting remington core locks 150 gr. It will be all over a paper plate @ 100 yards. It has a nikon scope and the trigger is @ 3 pounds. It isnt the scope. So what could be wrong with this gun?????

Thanks
Syrus

First thing I'd check is for the scope being loose.

It isnt nothing like that. Its has lepould bases and rings and i put threadlocker on all screws. I thought that it was the scope and i put a new scope on it and it is still doing the same thing. What else could it be.

shoot a differentn brand ammo. other than that make shure all the bedding screws (holding the stock to the action) are all tight

Syrus,

Is it clean? I mean good bore solvent and scrubbed clean.

Next, is the barrel floated? Take a dollar bill and run it under the barrel. It should slide w/o problems until you get to the bolt holding the stock on.

Just a couple of ideas.

Best thing to do is try a different load.

I had a 30-06 once that would shoot great groups with round nose bullets but would spray everything else all over the place.

how many rounds have been down the barrel, a good friend purchased a 700 in 270 in june it took about 90 rounds for it to start grouping he is now using 130gr fusion with a leupold vx-L, I could send you several different types of ammo to try if you think that might help.

If it is all over a paper plate at 100 yards, then changing ammo isn't likely to do much good. Even the worst ammo should group 4 inches.

I don't think M700s come with free-floating barrels, but I could be wrong.

they don't. i bought one in .22-250 and even though it isn't bedded, it shoots great. even my gunsmith says if it shoots good, then don't mess with it.

i suspect loose bedding screws

I just went down this road with my new 270 as well. Here are a few things I will reccomend:
Check the scope ring screws
Check the scope base mounts
Check the Action Bedding screws. You might want to loosen both of them and then slightly tighten both of them equally and starting with the foreward screw first. Then snug the rear screw, then further tighten down the foreward screw. I Don't believe that you will want to REALLY torque any of the screws, just make sure that they are tight.
Use a magnifying glass and look at the muzzle of the barrel and make sure that the crown show no sign of damage or copper build up. A knick or a ding on the very edge of the bore will really mess up your accuracy.
Next, try different types of bullets and bullet weights.
Also, have someone who is a good shot shoot your gun and see if he/she gets the same results.
Make sure that you have good shooting form and that you are not resting the barrel on any type of rest. Only allow the forearm of the gun to come in contact with your rest.

I hope this helps and good luck

Action screws should be torqued to at least 65 inch pounds.
If you have the windage screw on your rear scope mount that is where I would start.

Yes, im shooting from a benchrest. I changed the ammo to whinchester 130 gr bullets and i got the same results. Im not new at shooting or sihgting my guns in. I have never had this problem before. I took my 243, 7mm Mag and my 204 out as well and shot each gun 3 times and could place my wedding ring around the groups with the other guns. So i dont think that it is me. This dang gun wont shoot. At 100 Yards you can shoot it at a target about the size of a paper plate and it will hit all over it. The gun will not group. I dont have my recipt and i paid for this gun in cash "So my wife didnt find out" at wal-mart. How can i get this gun warrantied?

it will always come and bite you when you try and do something sneaky.

i would contact remington, explain the situation and send it to them. they will fix it

I'm having the same problem with my 700 (synthetic stock) .270. It was grouping about 2 inches last year sighting it in. This year I'm up to 4 inches out, all around - I guess that would be an 8 inch group?

A month or so ago at the range my hunting partner and I were shooting several rifles on a real steady bench with sandbags and the other rifles were real tight. When sighting it in last year, I had just read a Field & Stream article about running a brush and a swab through after each of the first few shots and so I did that breaking it in. It has now had about 3 boxes of Winchester 130 gr Power Points through it.

Mine still has the factotry trigger pull. I re tightened the Leopold scopre and the screw holding the stock to the barrel, but none were loose. I have not shot it again since doing that.

I am anxious to know what fix you find so I can try it.

If these guns are shooting as bad as it sounds like they are I doubt this is going to make a difference, but be sure and tighten the rear screw first and then the front screw last if either one of yall have ever removed the stocks before.

It only takes one round to foul the rifling. That's sure what it sounds like to me.

Lead or copper deposits can build up in the barrel rifling. Lead is pretty easy to get out because it is relatively soft, but copper can be a pain in the arse to get out.

Try a good solvent (as mentioned earlier by someone) and brush the barrel real well.
