I decided to get back out on the big water today after 3-4 weeks of hunting smaller waters. It was ok for me but I took a couple newbies and they thought it was great and Blaze got a lot of practice. I know I should be greatful for having a spot to shoot cans but there are too many. The coots are worse. I don't even know how to begin to estimate the numbers of coots but it's like a plague and I don't think that's any stretch of the truth. Saw lots of ducks but trying to call them off the huge rafts of coots and cans was a chore. I had one greenhead that I called in from way out in left field. He was a little flighty but I worked him in with a little sweet talkin. That's pretty rare for the very few greenheads we see in this lake. Most of em just raft up with the coots like all the other ducks and that made my day. Blaze was the real hero of the day. If it weren't for him we would have lost 4-5 of our ducks.

Looks like a great day. I have hunted that same spot many times. For what its worth you may want to photoshop your pic to get rid of the background. I know of a lot of lurkers that hunt around that area.

I was here for that. I remember the water level went from normal to flooded in no time. I know this drought sux for agriculture but its working for my duck season. The walk to the water is far! Sometimes I question weather a handful of ducks is worth the effort spent then I think about the memories with friends and family while swatting at them darned ducks. I was REAL angry at them duck this year and by my count I'm "winning" like a "warlock" with "tigers blood".

I'm not mad enough at them to walk a mile to water, but then again I was not out of country either. Go whack my quota for me this year. cheers

So are you using the Summit climber for anything or was it just in the truck? I have one of those and they get heavy after a while!

Yeah, it's for the dog. When we walk out and hug a tree the dog needs to be able to get out of the water.

Shoot all you want..just don't complain when the ranger shows up and takes your truck and guns for shooting too many.

We have game laws for a reason.

I'm scared to shoot birds out there because there are so many cans. The walk out there looks close and feels like forever. How far do you think it really is down that road to the water? Took the gf on that walk twice once scouting and once hunting, bad idea. The mud was also very bad when I went.

We call the cans " cants" because u get ur limit so fast the rest of the hunt all ya here is "ducks comin in! Oh, can't shoot it" the walk to the end of the road is not even half way! To the water is probably 1 or 1.5 miles. I would not attempt walking anywhere on the lakebed that you are not sure about. There are some very dangerous places.

From the last parking spot to aproxmilty even with the island is 1.02 miles, so my guess to where the actual water's edege is, is just about 1/2 mile. Using google earth to measue the distance, may not be exact but close enough.

Sure hope we get rain to bring the lake levels up this spring.

nidea Hopedale the water is on the far side of the island. Island is now more of a lake point. So it just might be a mile hike to water.

Good shoot. It was a long walk and paddle when I hunted that lake last year when the water was up. This year... you deserve to kill em.
