My Dad has a .30-06 and looking to get something with a little less recoil. I was thinking about buying him a new rifle and taking his .30-06 in exchange.
I've shot a 7mm-08 once. I shot a deer with my brother's gun so I wasn't paying attention to the recoil.
What would y'all say it is comparable to? Trying to decide whether to get him a .25-06 or a 7mm-08.

.25-06 will have more kick that the 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 is a necked down 308 case, the .25-06 is a necked down 30-06 case.

.257 Roberts??
Haven't shot one of those. I hear they're pretty light in recoil though.
I think as long as it's significantly less than a .30-06 he'll probably like the 7mm-08.
Anybody have both??? Think he'd be happy with a 7mm-08??

I have both, the Roberts does kick a little less but the.7-08 will be such an improvement over the 30-06, he would be pleased I think.

.25-06 will have more kick that the 7mm-08. The 7mm-08 is a necked down 308 case, the .25-06 is a necked down 30-06 case. I disagree, there's alot more to it than that. I have a .25-06 and just finished a 7mm-08. Both are on the same rifle platform in laminate stocks. .25-06 has less recoil, but not by much. Recoil is proportional to energy, and the 7mm-08 makes about 100 lbs more. Either will be a major step down in recoil vs. the ol' .30-06. Both are very comfortable to shoot. .25-06 shoots just a tad flatter at 24" barrel velocity, but the 7mm-08 is more compact and does better from shorter barrels.

I would get a 6.5x55, but thats my opinion.
On here people generaly think the 7mm08 hung the moon... it has the least felt recoil of any rifle with the best balistics and knockdown, more than a 270 and 3006 and is always the best choice no matter what...
Im sure a 7mm 08 would be a good option as well as a 243, 3030, 6.5x55, 308, 257 wby, 257 roberts, 260 rem etc... all of them have their following but in reality I doubt one is really any better than the rest.

Load some 110 grain bullets for the 3006 and it should be pretty similar to the 25-06. I loaded some 110 grain prohunters for my fiance in my 270 and she shoots it better, however they are slightly reduced as I was scared they would turn into a bomb if I didnt. matt

I'm trying not to get too crazy with specifics. I have a .25-06 and it's great.
Just thought of getting him a 7-08 and having a new round to play with when reloading.

I'll throw this in the mix. Keep the .30-06 and go with the managed recoil loads from Remington in the .30-06. I have them for my .270 and it takes the felt recoil down to a .243 and it is still very deadly on South Texas WT bucks for a child or a woman. I have seen them work firsthand. Remington claims as much as a 50% reduction in felt recoil. Here is a link and you can click on the Specifications tab on the right side for the cartridges available. Unless he is looking for an excuse to buy a new rifle then I would go with the 7mm-08 then. http://www.remington.com/products/ammuni...px?panel=1#data

You can use this recoil calculator to figure the actual recoil of a rifle to compare rifles and calibers. If the rifle has a muzzle brake, it will reduce the felt recoil. http://www.handloads.com/calc/recoil.asp

I changed from, and still have, a 30.06, to .270, to a7mm08. 7mm08 whole different ball game as to the way it kicks to me.

Don't forget the good old 7x57 aka 7mm Mauser either. My 10 yr old grandson, who's pretty small shoots one just fine loaded with either 139 or 150 gr. bullets @ around 2700 fps.
Old age ain't for sissies!

The kick of the 25-06 vs 7-08... Depends on how hot the 25-06 is loaded
The 25-06 will typically kick a tad less just due to most 25-06's will weight more due to longer action and longer barrel.
But in reality your talking just oz's of felt recoil.
25-06 is a very fun gun and with modern bullets in 100gr the 25-06 jumps to a whole new level when getting those bullets above 3300 fts.
On the flip the 7-08 is a handier gun in a deer blind with the short action and barrel

IF he really likes the '06 spend the money to get a REALLY good kick pad on it. I have a 300wm that women and children can shoot w/o compaining. I have no idea what brand it is but it comes with a storage pin that you put in it so the pad doesn't compress.

Recoil is not just about caliber or amount of powder, it's also bullet weight. The 7mm08 with a 162 grain bullet is really nice. My 8 year old shoots it.

I think I'm gonna get a new rifle anyway and .30-06 was one I was considering so I figured I'll go ahead and get him what he wants and trade.
I know kick pads have come a LONG way from what I first started with. The 06 will probably get a new kick pad anyway as I know there are better ones since that gun was made.
