also learned i need to doe hunt harder in bow season, instead of relying on the doe weekend in my AR county bang

Bow season is the best time to fill those doe tags...we usually pop one or two durrin the doe day though...Lamps tags are great tools for our area i usually get a few a year...gona be gettin around ten this year...how much land do you have and what county? they are easy to get if you qualify for them

I'm only on 30 acres, Anderson county. Im pretty sure theres a higher doe population than bucks. Another thing is I keep giving does "passes" in bow season for having fawns with them... but I'm sure thats for another thread for another time...

Its a personal preferance deal...truthfuly they are old enough to survive on there own by then and will find another doe with a fawn to run with after that most of the time... the only ones i usualy let slide are the doe with late born fawns... and somethin i have seen alot is those fawns only know the region there mom kept them in so more than likly if you shoot that doe you will be seein those fawns in the same spot for the rest of the year and hopefully longer.

Here is the info for LAMPS the requirements change about every year by county and they will be avalible in may...minimum for my county is 50ares...prolly will be around90-100 for yours
1.Complete a LAMPS Permit Application providing accurate information on the estimated amount and types of habitat on the property.
2.Sign a statement acknowledging your awareness of penalties associated with falsified information.
3.Report information annually on the number of deer hunters on the property and any deer seen/harvested.
DEADLINES
Applications:
1.September 1st to guarantee a response before the first day of hunting season
2.October 1st for counties with "doe days" beginning opening day of General Season or
3.3rd Friday in October for counties with "doe days" beginning Thanksgiving Day.

Harvest Data:
February 15th to receive LAMPS renewal notice the following season.

I also learned that:

....a lot of bucks are about 3.5 years old. peep

....coons, turkey, and deer will plot against you to get the prize.

....change out the paperback & magazines in the blind once in a while.

....make sure the ipod gets a charge each day

....I get good radio reception in my blinds

I also learned that loosing a deer is one of the worst feelings ever.

I hate cows.

I did too good of a job running the hogs off my section.

The deer on my section disapear during the extended season.

I'm going back to meat hunting next year and only shooting doe.

I also learned when you have a poor fawn crop you should drive slower through the area you hunt.

I learned that slime in your tires does infact go bad after a few years, I learned that no matter how many plugs you put in your tires when they start going flat due to the slime going bad is an utterly futile effort. I learned that a new bottle of slime is worth what a new set of tires would have cost.
I learned hunting with a .44 mag pistol is super fun and will kill a buck purty quick.
I learned that nocks need to be replaced before every season and that you should always shoot your broad heads before going to the stand to hunt.

I learned that kids really pay attention to what you say and do, my nephew and niece both killed thier first deer this year but hunted with me last year.
Had a very enlightening year this year.

I learned that my 6 year old sons spike "his first deer" was a bigger trophy than my all time best buck from 20 years of hunting.

Just because you are drawn for a New Mexico deer tag, and know the local hunters, doesnt mean youll fill it..

Midterms are a hunters worst enemy..

Landowners are extremely grateful when you let button bucks walk instead of mistaking them for does..

Its fun to watch younger hunters get excited over a hunt..

Having your own jeep is F'in awesome!

Dont try and buy a hunting license on black friday..

Nothin teaches you to be a better shot than tracking the ones you barely hit..

I hunt in Palo Pinto County. What I learned is this, in spite of a huge fire, the incredible drought, & the intense heat, Mother Nature will find a way to survive!!! Two nice bucks taken off the lease, one was my 8 pt......

I learned a few things hunting this year:

1- Unlike what we thought up here in Wisconsin, hunting over a timed feeder does not mean you have a "lock" on deer, just squirrels.

2- The deer definately have different bodies in Texas than Wisconsin. They grow way bigger bodies up north, but the racks spread out quickly in Texas.

3- There are alot more "culls" in Texas than Wisconsin. As a matter of fact, I've never seen a 4 or 5 pointer with 1 side being bare ever in Wisconsin, but they appear to pretty common in Texas.

4- The "Big Thicket" is some really tough hunting and unlike anything I've ever tried before. Fun, but very different.

I learned a couple of things.

1.Pop-up Blinds do not conceal your scent as much as you think..
2.Sweating the small things is crazy, people make mistakes, move on and have a good time
3.Some Land Owners REALLY don’t care about anything but themselves, no matter how much money the lease cost you!!
4.Hunting with a good friend and watching him take a couple of critters makes cold beer taste just that much better!!!

I have learned alot in 5 years of doing this. This year was no exeption.

1.Feeding year round pays dividends, but when it gets bad, there isn't enough I can do. Pay off is in fawns and young deer for future seasons.

2.The Good Lord can put more feed out with a good rain than I can buy from a dozen feed stores.

And the deer ALWAYS prefer what The Good Lord provides them.

1. Never set your rattling horns on top of your binoculars when hunting in a small blind with a ten yr. old.
2. "Hang on" translates to "shoot now" when heard through ten yr.-old ears.
3. Losing a 135+ deer is agonizing-especially when you didn't see where or, even if, he was actually hit...

Amen to this....I got hooked about 10yrs ago and can't shake the addiction. 4am wake up calls to bugling elk in the night is an awesome feeling when at camp. Seeing one come to within 15yds of your cow calling makes the heart pound and hands tremble for sure. cheers

Coons at our lease could break into my house if they knew where I lived

Pop up camper is better than a tent

There ain't no better hunting buddy than my 17 yr old son

Killing a trophy 10 minutes before sunrise opening morning makes the rest of the season a great time to scout.

The mid day hours can be very productive.

My lease has more trophies on it.

I suck at rattling!

There are lots of deer on my lease in places I would not have expected.

Hunting with a camera is cool.

Indians loved our lease many years ago.

Turkeys are fun to hunt in the fall. (already new this just had a lot of time to do it last fall)

Mesquite thorns can go through dang near anything!

If it wasn't for my family I would stay at the lease all season.

I learned that when you finally buy your dream place out in the country, your time and $$$ alotment to hunt suffers greatly! frown

High fence, low fence, no fence, it really doesn't matter as long as you're hunting!
