I keep up with climate activity just as a hobby. The strong La Nina that caused the worst drought in Texas history is starting to show rapid signs of falling apart. The good news data is coming from the "Land Down Under" Australia.

They measure what is called "Southern Oscillation Index" (SOI). When the La Nina is strong the Daily pressure readings are high above 45 as seen in Dec. 24, 2011, note by Dec. 11, 2011 down to 9.44 and by Jan. 2012, a -16.86 and headed towards El Nina, see chart below:

http://www.longpaddock.qld.gov.au/seasonalclimateoutlook/southernoscillationindex/30daysoivalues/

A weak El nina will bring winter and spring rains, we are starting to see signs of the of the SOI change already, rain and snow in west Texas today.
So lets hope and pray that this SOI will continue to head in the negative direction all spring and summer and turn those wheat fields green with wet snow and rain. An ocean of green is perfect nesting cover for pheasants.

The SOI influence half the earths climate.

I think the drought set the table for us here in the coastal prairies. Some of the pastures were being taken over by nut sage, and matted grass. Much of that is now gone. We've had really good December and January rains. We have a decent season this year. I think we'll have a great season next year with just a few more spring rains.
