I am going to make one last effort with my 11 yo son who is still gunning for his first buck. The last two seasons he has sat in the blind with me at least 40-50 hours and only took a doe at the begging of this season.. He is a very good and patient kid who still wants a buck. I think with all the work he helped with and sitting in the blind this kid deserves a buck! How long did ya have to make it till your young one (or even you) had a pair of antlers.. Let me say I am proud of this kid and he knows its not all about antlers ... but he deserves a pair .. Will he get one on the last youth hunt weekend? Hope so..

Gotta think the odds are against him if he's sat there for 2 years and not seen anything, but I wish the young man luck.

He will get one maybe this year maybe the next....whats good to see is that he is loving the experiance and is keepin hard at it...i hunted for 4 years or so shooting doe and pigs...got a shot at my first buck the third year in Del Rio on our old lease that was one of the biggest deer iv seen to date... i was prolly 9 and dad said he stopped counting points at 14 and he was 22inches+ inside...had him at 100 yards problem was i wasnt comfortable with a larger gun yet and was shootin a 22-250..popped him right in the sholder and my pops didnt shoot him again cuz he was lookin like he was bout to fall...got down and tracked him for hours...never found him but it just made me hunt harder the next few years...ill never forget that moment...putting it all together today id say the buck was 180 at least...ended up gettin a cull 7 the next year that was small but still was very happy with him...as long as hes enjoying hiself and loves the hunt is the main thing...he will get one soon enough

This is my sons first season, and if a buck comes out while he's in the blind then he can have at it.

Took me at least 10-12 years. For years we had crappy places to hunt, wouldn't even see a deer. Now I realize they were the only places my Dad could afford. But it was the hunting with my Dad that meant the most to me anyways and the reason the bug stayed with me and I'm passing it on to my sons. Later years with my Dad we had better places to hunt and I generally shot a buck every year. My son and I now do so each year too (last year was an exception due to the forage conditions with all the rain).

But It was a good 10-12 years for me. My son - now HE'S SPOILLED! It was before they implemented AR's where we hunt so his first buck was a 4 pointer half an hour into his first morning hunt. Even with AR's his luck still holds. Due to Boy Scout commitments he only hunted with me 1 weekend this season (going back out this weekend though) however that evening of the first day he hunted out walks aa 16.5" inside spread, 18.5" outside 8 pointer. He's going on the wall.

Guess we are not the only ones. I am very optimistic about next year. We have a number of deer that will be 3.5 next year and a couple will be 4.5 .. Never know whats gonna step out. All nocturnal right now. He has a love for the outdoors and a great outlook and the choice to hunt one last time is his. We always have the option for another doe or hog but just might get lucky ya know. Looks like ya got a nice payoff Lazyman. Persistence and patience are virtues the kid has no doubt.

It was his first hunting season, first morning of youth season, about 30 minutes after sunrise.

3 years to finally get my first buck but it was all worth and not once did I get discouraged from hunting. As long as he loves hunting time won't matter cause it sure doesn't to me, now I have restrained on shooting before but simply cause it was nothing I wanted to take as my first buck.

it took me 3 years to get my first deer period, then another 1 to get my first antlered buck.

we hunted on a small tract of land in walker county, all pine trees. never even saw a buck on those places, you weren't allowed to shoot does back in those days.

My uncle took me to his place down south, were i shot a doe(turned out to be a nubbin buck)

first real buck i shot, my uncle had bought a few hundred acres north of hondo to subdivide, it had an old deer blind on it, he dropped me off there one morning, blind didn't have a door, no feeder, matter of fact there was a cottontail living in there when i showed up.

i plopped down on my 5 gallon bucket, about 30 min after sunrise a forkhorn came walking down the trail. that was the start to what has been a pretty successful hunting career.

For it is not the quarry that we truly seek, but the adventure.

Funny thing about kiddos they can have a good time anywhere and any time, like playing in the box that the new toys come in. My son has been with me on almost every deer hunt since he was 2. Started shooting when he was 5 took a doe at 6 and another at 7. Got a buck this year at 8. Very impressed with him, after a few years in the blind he didn't want a young buck. Gave him the green light a few times on cull 5's and spike. He'd get em in the scope and say nope that deer is 2 1/2 I'll wait.

My boy had crazy luck and shot a 10pt within the first 30 mins of his first hunt where he actually got to shoot.

It took me 4 years to get my 1st deer but my kids dropped there 1st deer on there 1st trip out. Watching them get there 1st deer was better than me killing my 1st!

5 years of hunting before I got my first deer. There weren't many deer in central Mississippi in the 70's

In the early 90s the oldest nephew got his first buck his first day hunting.

Got a doe on my first hunt ever at age 12. Another 4 years went by before I got my next. A 4 pt buck I took with my bow.
