I haven't bought a hunting dog in a long time, and forgot the websites I looked at. Any help would be appreciated.
Looking for websites to find a started retriever...or if you have one let me know.
thanks

You couldn't touch a good finished dog for $2500.00. (depending on ones definition of finished).

Exactly, 2500 is the going rate for a started dog. Think about it, pups with good lines run around 800 so by the time you put the work in on the training, I wouldn't go less than 2500 either. I know of at least 1 dog you couldn't touch under 10k.

depends on what started is also.. you can find started dogs, a dog that is force fetched and could pass a junior test for 1500-2000 on entry express. I looked at that trainer that comes here and she has 2 with videos of them and they could pass a started test now and they are 2000.

I'm looking for a dog to hunt with. I have no intention of doing any field tests. I'm really just looking for a dog that has drive, has been started retrieving, and good obedience. I got my last dog as a 2 year old and she had quite a bit of training, but had only been on 1 hunt.

There was one that sold over the summer that had a Jr title and 2 passes on his Sr title for $2300. You just need to keep looking til you find what you want.
Shopping with your husband is like hunting with the game warden. Experience is what you get, when you didn't get what you wanted.

I suggested via pm he look to a dog that's been exposed, rather than started. $1800 is out of range too. I don't know that you can touch a started dog any lower than that for the exact reasons TBK stated. It takes time to get all that into a dog and during that time (which in and of itself is worth money), the dog needs fed, de-wormed, kennel care, exercise, possibly vaccines, etc. Can't see how anyone who's put a few months on a pup could go any lower.

Also with the agencies that train bomb dogs for the military snatching them up left and right you'll be hard pressed to find anything that's reliable for less then that.

Hunt test or ft people will sellmthere washouts for less just so they don't put more time into them. Washouts would be great for hunting. There is a dog in rtf selling for 4500. He has been paying 800 a month since the dog was 6 mo old and he is now over 2 plus he was a 2500 dollar pup,do the math. Some people won't make a dime but lose there [censored] when selling a started or finished dog.

Angie has two dogs that are 2k. I bet they were at least 1200.00 as a pup. They have over 6 mo of training and they are still 2k.
Someone mentioned not being able to touch a dog for less than 10k? There are dogs king for 10 times that. There is a lady named Marion stroud swingle that buys or tries to buy the top derby dogs every year. She pays WELL over 100k for these two year olds. If you have the money why not?

I had a dog that was just finished with yard work and would have made a good hunter but not an upper level hunt test dog. I was asking 1500 for him and a bomb dog lady called came to look at him and offered me 3500. They can pay lots when the governments is paying

My point in all this is u can find it if u look. A well bred started dog from a pro for 1500-2k is a great deal. When I say started I mean ready for junior hunt test or duck blind right now

I bought a started dog from tioga retrievers almost two years ago. He is one of the best dogs I have ever been around. He is a great house dog and a good hunter. I would check out the two they have listed on the web. I do not think 2k is a lot to pay when you stop and think about what you are getting.
That red one pictured above looks like a great dog.
