Has anyone ever fed deer peanuts for protein as supplement over the summer? My feeder can throw these, without the shell of course, so I was thinking about it.

Are peanuts all that different than acorns regarding nutrition for deer?

I know domestic goats will eat the heck out of them and goats and deer are both considered browsers.

Deer eat the heck out of them, they're very high protein. You might try cottonseed meal also...I'm not sure about cost on these. Bobo or Stxranchman could probably tell us...Y'all out there?

Peanut hay is high this year along with any other type of hay and that is probably the only source of peanuts that you could afford for feeding deer. In years past, peanut hay was going for $55.00 for the big rolls. This year they are priced at $120.00 and up. Cotton crop was also affected by the drought, so what used to be a waste product (cotttonseed meal) that was cheap feed is probably considerably higher. Nothing going to be cheap for a while, until it rains a considerable amount.

If you can plant them successfully....yep they are a great supplement. We hunt Comanche County where peanuts were the main crop for decades, and the deer went absolutely nuts(pun intended) over peanuts, especially during the harvest. But, the USDA kinda changed things up a few years ago, so peanuts are not as abundant.

I'm considering planting them this year, but sorta depends upon the drought outlook for 2012. Predictions are, that it will continue, but not as bad as 2011.
