My girlfriend and I are going to go ahead and get our CHLs sometime later in the year and I wanted to go ahead and get her a carry gun to start getting used to it.

Any ladies on here have any recommendations or any guys have any ideas from what your wife / girlfriend carries?

She's no wimp by any means so I think she could probably handle and be effective and accurate with most things.. just looking for suggestions!

Also if any of y'all own shops here in DFW and want to make a deal on two guns, let me know, because I'll be looking for a carry gun as well!

What shooting experience does she have? What guns have you both shot? What does she like to shoot? What,if anything, do you currently own?

Borrow some .380s,.38s and 9mm from friends or family or go to a range and rent some.

That will help decide the caliber and possibly the actual gun.

Otherwise just handle as many guns as possible and find one she likes. Probably anything she likes will work for you as well. Someone with a shop or an FFL should b e able to make you a good deal on a couple of .38s or a pair of .380s or 9mms. Heck, you may both want .45s!

Just get hands on experience to make the decision.

Good luck.

I carry a Bersa 380, my truck "carries" a Ruger SR9. I want to check out the smaller Ruger 9mm (can't remember the model).

I agree with Ralph, get to handle as many pistols as possible to gift her hand, pick the best 3-5 and the test fire if you can.

It needs to feel "right" in her hand or she will never feel comfortable shooting it.

Women can shoot anything a man can. Female LEO's if offered a choice choose the Glock 19 a majority of the time.

I agree. Options never hurt and peoples choice in guns sometimes change.

S&W hammerless airweight .38 special+P is the best, most controllable weapon known to man when you are in physical contact or on the ground with the suspect.

It can do things you cannot do with other firearms.

This one is next to top of the heap:

My wife took her CHL with a 1911.

It's not what she carries, but what she shoots the best.

Fighting the weapon and shooting the weapon are two entirely different skill sets.

Cochise,

Take an Unloaded J-frame hammerless and a conventional compact semi-auto and wrestle around with your lady even grabbing the gun hand. See which one she can snap off in a vital area. The most important factor for lady carry is how she handles it during contact because thats going to be how it goes down.

There is no reason to carry a semi-auto either for SD unless it holds at least four more rounds than a revolver.

If a lady pulls a significant size semi-auto with a safety out for SD, the crook has enough time for a snack, to take the weapon, split her head open, rob her, and put his new gun in his waistband.

If you want the lady to live...Nuthin beats hammerless airweight!!!

Don't agree JL. You're assuming contact. A G 19 will blow the doors off a snubbie anyday anyway you want to play it. It's just a fast with more firepower, less flash and essentially no need to reload.

Shooting paper at a target involves mainly marksmanship or more correctly pseudomarksmanship. Put somebody into a drill, say something like the El Presidente, then you'll have a much better idea of how somebody will handle a weapon under stress and under combat conditions.

As long as it has a long barrel for the assailant to deflect and control or when he makes contact with the lady, game over.

Anything past the hand creates a "simple machine"...Shes DEAD.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_machine

The Hammerless revolver is king not just because of that. There is virtually no way to force it out of battery.

The Glock is a great combat weapon or as a Backup to a J-frame.

I know ladies can recreational shoot as good as a man but when it comes to SD, most women are at a significant disadvantage to even the smallest of men.

You're splitting hairs. That close it doesn't matter. You're still assuming contact and chances are that's not going to happen. Simple fact if she misses she might be just as dead. G19 vs snubbie in just about any scenario is not even a contest. Besides female LEO's don't seem to lose their weapons very often.

I agree, Glock -vs- Snubbie in close contact is not a contest...J-Frame wins everytime.

Female LEO's don't get treated the same as wifey in a dark parking lot.

Have the old lady try to jab you in the vitals with her hand and then put a ruler in her hand and have her do the same.

I do agree a compact Glock is a good tool for the job.

smile
