The coyote population in our neighborhood as skyrocketed in recent years and one got my wife's dog three weeks ago. We live in a small subdivision (two streets wide) between two large ranches. We all live on small acreages and are hoping to get rid of some of the coyotes that pass through. Is there a significant advantage in the the 3 1/2 magnum over the 3 inch in a 12 gauge? I have some number 1 buckshot. Would this be suitable or what would you recommend?

3.5" have quite a bit more power....but 3" should kill yotes within 50 yards with buckshot and a full choke.

3" with a tight choke like a dead coyote and some #4 shot or dead coyote load. Should roll them up pretty good out to 50yrs.

I have used 2 3/4, 3", and 3.5" #4 buck shot. I can tell a difference and think the 3.5" is the way to go if price is of no concern.

I have a Model 870 express I use for turkeys and am planning on using it. I bought a box of 3 inch number 4 heavy shot today. Looked at a couple of locations but could not find the Dead Coyote Loads.

In my opinion the additional cost isn't worth the little bit of gain! You only get just a few more pellets in the 3 1/2 inch shells and a bit less velocity all for quite a bit higher price! The #1 buck will work. But #4 3" will launch (41) .25 diameter pellets. It will easily get the job done out as far as any other. And it is about as cheap as it gets unless your buying 00 buck in bulk. Good luck with the coyotes!
