I have a chance to take a black buck on a friends ranch. I have heard the meat tastes like rotten leather so dont really want to shoot one of the little guys. Has anyone eaten black buck?

i've eaten them, they are pretty good, better than whitetail but not as good as axis.

i've never seen them run a whitetail off, they are half the size, a big one will weigh 80 lbs

I don't know where you got your info, but it was almost entirely incorrect.

I have eaten them and do not think they are as good as whitetail and definetly not as good as axis. The male Black Buck is very aggressive and on Hill Country ranches I have seen them back down WT bucks around feeders.

I watched them run off whitetail for 3 days. The black buck dont really walk anywhere they were always running and they were spooking the whitetail.

Don't think you'll be disappointed w/ the meat. I've been eating one that I took a couple weeks ago since then (several ways) and it's been excellent! Smoked it, braised it and simply seasoned and grilled over mesquite (ALL extremely tasty). I love axis, but it rivals it closely IMO.

I wouldn't pass on the opportunity...but appreciate you're wanting to only take what you plan to eat.

They are not hard to hunt they just stand out in the fields. You can't get real close to them but they just graze in the fields. So I go back next week and i will take one hopefully. Also not real big into mounts. Thanks for the help

You are lucky that was the only mistake you made. God help you if you had taken a Whitetail that was less than 160 inches. You would have been tared and feathered and would let forget that you should have waited a few years until it was a good deer.
